Whats does life support modules do?

I research the life support tech for the range and other benifits, but what does the modules do in ship designer.

The engines give my ship the range it needs. What does life support really do? Sorry for the newbie question.

The engines do not give you any extra range, the improve your speed (number of squares you can move per turn). The life support modules increase your range (max number of squares you can be from nearest base).

the range technologies also give a % increase in range that is applied to the base range of a ship, the base range depends on the life support modules you put on the ship.

They allow your ships to travel further away from your planets.
Like on a huge map if your planets are on the left side of the map, Life support lets your ships travel further away to the right.

The best way to do this though is to build star bases on the right side, This allows your ships to travel further.

I have noticed (through making my miniaturisation skill around 40,000 - 50,000) that no matter how many ultra life support modules you put on a ship, it will never be able to traverse the whole map without having to resort to building a starbase.

I made a huge hulled ship, with a range of 80 sectors, yet it still couldn't explore the whole darn map.
