Is there a way to destroy a planet you have invaded?

What I mean is when you capture a planet can you decide not to start a colony on it. I have removed all population from a planet hoping I wouldn't have manage it but the next turn it is still under my control and the population has increased from 0 to 100.

My reason for this is on a large or huge map with war as the only option I will be trying to manage up to 20 or 30 weak planets that I don't want.

In the planet screen, hit the details button in the lower right, then hit 'Destroy Colony'. Doing so abandons the planet, destroys all improvements, and lowers the planet's class a few points. Just be careful that the AI does not recolonize it from under you (but between attacking with mass drivers then abandoning the planet, you should be able to render it pretty near useless).

I've had that happen to me before and they used the planets as production colonies to launch a massive assault at the heart of my empire.

That is a good idea, except when the ally is also at war with them.... I was fighting the Drengin (along with the Altarians and Torians) and gave them some of the planets (the Drengin had taken over roughly 2/3 of the map)

Then, god knows how, the drengin suddenly took all these planets back with a very punitive force, and wiped out both the Altarians and the Torians, who were actually becoming militarily stronger, due to my research skills, and the fact I couldn't be bothered to spend much money on ships.
