Ship upgrades

Bug or just annoying?

I'm not sure if this falls within the class of a bug or just something that is plain annoying but when a ship is upgraded there are times when it sometimes retains information from previous upgrades. I had a ship that I used a completely different design than I did in a previous game. After about the 5th upgrade on this new ship, when i went in to upgrade it again it had switched back to the previous design. I do make a blank "prototype" hull but after I upgrade it (and rename it), i obsolete it to get it off my list. When it switched designes I couldn't change it back since I could no longer get to the design. I know the game itself suggest not saving over ships but what is the point of naming a ship if I cant upgrade it using the same name? I hate having "Constructor Mk10000" or the like. If it isn't possible to save over a design and have it completly rewrite the file, please give us the ability access ALL of our ship designs no matter the tech level at the beginning so we can delete all our designs as we need to. It would also be nice to access obsolete designs but that is a different request. It is annoying to have to load up a game of "battle of the gods" just to delete old designs.

I forgot to mention that although that one time it completly switched designs, it does have a habbit of leaving old componets from previous builds on as well. The complete switch in hull designs really annoyed me though. When it has the extra componets, although they do not add to the "cost" of a ship, they cause the actual componets to be invisible just leaving the jewelry.

Don't use the same name for an upgraded design, is all I can say. By over-writing the actual file containing the design for a previous version, you're confusing the poor computer

I tend to find affixing Roman numerals (II, III, IV etc) works okay but if you really have an aversion to something which is plainly a version number, you could take the in-game date and cipher it. So for example, 15 December 2234 could be written as Ehacal (3=D E or F, 4=G H or I, 1=A, 2=B or C, 5=J K or L) although version numbers might use less characters

It's all about having a naming system.

I use a descriptive naming system, sicne I can't be bothered to make up fancy names anymore ("ESF Belligerent Mk. MCMLXXIV"), for example:

Trader 11pc XR is a trade ship with a base move of 11 parsecs that has two life support modules (LR = Long Range, XR = eXtended Range, XLR = eXtreme Long Range)

Invader 14pc 1k5 is transport with 14 parsec base move and 3 standard troop modules (1k5 meaning 1.5k, using the k in place of the decimal point)

It shouldn't confuse anything. It should completely over write the file when saving. When you rename the ship to save, it does not give you the option of upgrading all since you have none of the "new" model in service yet. There is also the problem of planets not always picking up the fact that you changed so you have to go back and re-instruct your planets on what to build. What is the point of them fixing the upgrade all function if it cant be used due to not being able to use a previous name? While I know that once I have them named I can just use them as they come up but I do not always have the same techs so I would need multiple types of each design for each new tech but it still will not allow the use of upgrade all.

Norad, what version of the game are you using? Have you updated to version 1.11?

I think I know what he's talking about with upgrading a ship design, but still having to manually assign its construction. When you go to update a design, and you "clear" it in the ship designer, the game behaves as though you're creating a totally new design, and thus doesn't switch your spaceports to the new design after you obselete the old one.

I figured that out when I had to whack the "Clear" button on the core designs when I tried updating them in 1.2 Beta 2, because I couldn't remove any of the components (I'll have to go post about that in the appropriate bug-report thread).

As for not using the same name, it's really not that bad... There are many ways you can denote different versions of a ship without using numbers.

Instead of Constructor, then Constructor MK 2, and so on, why not something based off generic terms for contruction, like: Constructor, Crafter, Builder, Erector, Infrastructor, and Creator?

Alternatively, you could use professions, like: Constructor, Carpenter, Sculptor, Mason, Artisan, and Engineer.

I once made a frigate that resembled the shape of a claw, so I built off that to easily get a name for it and it's upgraded counterparts: Laser Claw, Plasma Claw, Phasor Claw, and so on. Obviously, they were armed with their namesakes.

I like using themes for some races, too--the Korx are (at least in my mind) radically capitalist, so I give their ship classes names like Establisher, Franchiser, and Monopolizer. The Drath are reptillian, so I name their ship classes after various real and fictitious reptiles.

Of course, sometimes you just get really stumped as to a good name for your new design; when that happens, I'd suggest perusing the pages of a thesaurus, or a multilingual dictionary.

I'm using v1.2b2

It did it again on a game I was playing last night. I have a constructor that I made but named over something in a new game (since I cant see what I already have named and I get tired of guessing or adding mk # till I find one I've not used). When I get to Hyperwarp I (I think) it converts to a stock constructor with what smaller engines (looks only) and they have hyperwarp. This is after I save, it switches from my 'design' to the stock constructor style. I know I probably confused with that, but I really don't know how to word exactly what is happening.

Exactly! Late in the game on a large + map, it is a bit annoying to have to go through and reset every starport, then go along and upgrade each ship in each fleet. My poor left mouse button is going to fall off if I keep playing bigger maps. I'm just asking for it to be a little more user friendly and cut out a few million clicks per game.

The easiest way to not worry about using a name you already have designed for a ship is to delete all of your varients after a long game. Just start a new game under battle of the gods and delete all of the use designed ships you no longer want to use for the new official game.

I have base ship designs with no functional equipment on them, just jewlery and named like Human Builder ect.
I keep the basic models and delete all of the varients then in a new game I can re-use all of the names I like when I get new functional components

I delete all ships after every game. The only ones I keep are PROBE (scout), freighter and transports.

I really don't want my ships to look too similar from game to game.
