Stupid Arcean AI

The Arceans did something so stuid this last game it's not even funny .

The Drengi and I was at war (btw I don't think I ever got any message stating his, they just started to attack my ships), anyway...

Got a message from the Arceans saying they was going to help me out in my war against the Drengi, so they gave me some ships. 4 troop transports to be exact, and since I didn't have any myself, I told them to travel to my infulence erea so I could use them.

The next turn I got a message from the Arceans telling me they know what I was doing and wasn't going to let me suround them with trooptransports, so they decleard war on me!

Oh wow, that's one big doodah of a blunder. I think a couple new lines of code would be in order here.

The same thing happened to me with my friends the Korx yesterday, so it is not Arcean specific ...

That gives me an evil idea. Make a ship that is inferior to a fleet of your ships but worth good exp, have them meet next to a military starbase to really stiack the odds in your favor, give the inferior ship to the ai, blow it up, harvest the experience. Repeat.

Maybe the AI isn't so stupid..maybe it was their plan all along to have an incident so they can have an excuse to start a war with you...the moral is: Beware of "free" gifts from your "friends".

Of course, it could just be that the AI is missing a few lines of code...

Ive had this happen multiple times, the AI is way to senstive with your troop transports. For example i was at war with a race, and i had my transports on my side of the boarder ready to cross over on the next turn. However there was another race i had good relations with further below on the map, however they shared a border with the race i had hostilities with. So the next turn i get the message "we know what your doin, do you think we are dumb...etc" and they declare war on me even though there cloest inhabitable plaent is a very long way off (was playin huge gal)

Hmm... I wonder if this might work _against_ the AI as well.
Consider the following:

1) Ally with race A
2) Go to war with race B
3) Move a couple of troop carriers into your allies territory
4) Hand them to race B
5) Sit back and watch...

Btw: The AI still considers (influence?) starbases as planets, right?
So you probably don't need to ally with race A. Instead, gift a starbase to race A and some troop carriers to race B...

Just some random thinking

I have had similar experiences.
On a similar note I was losing a masochist level game a few days ago and looked at a diplomatic report of one of the races, it gave a minus because they "know what you are doing". I thought "You do? I wish I did"

I myself have suffered from a similar case.

The Drath declared war on me, because apparently I was building my forces near there planet. What? No I'm not, I'm attacking the Drengin who are.... oh right, they are right next to you and my trropships had to travel past your planet to get there. Duh!!

I'm guessing the best way to go about fixing this would be to set the trigger for this reaction to only occur is the ship stays stationary near a planet for a few turns, rather than the over-the-top reaction we get now.

"Sir, warships are in our solar system!"

"Enemy warships?"

"No Sir, friendly. But they are pretty mean-looking. Perhaps we should warn them that they are getting to close to our..."

"ATTACK!!!"

That sucks. I haven't actually had this happen yet, but I'll be on the look out for it now. I really think they need to do something about the "We know what you are doing" factor because most of the time it's just plain wrong. They are also quite sensitive about it, yet have no trouble leaving their own fleets and transports strewn all through your territory if the target they were headed for makes peace with them or is defeated.

In my current game, some minor race (who's planet I haven't even found yet) declared war on me because they thought I was going to attack them. The only thing I can think of was that they thought my troop transports passing by the influence starbases they built in my territory were somehow a threat. Sure it doesn't matter with a minor, actually it gave me an excuse to clear out their starbases they kept putting up in my territory, but it clearly demonstrates this problem with the AI.

I almost always have the "We know what you are doing" from everyone nearby except the race I'm going to attack because I keep my transports away from potential enemy ships that could be built, launched and attack in a single turn (although I'm not sure yet if the AI is even capable of doing so).

Edit: Another thing I was going to mention about these triggers... When you are culture flipping others, you get the close borders and the alarming influence factors, fine. When your target planets flip and revolt against them, if you aren't putting more pressure on them at the moment, it clears those flags and suddenly things are fine again. You think that they'd be ticked about it instead of improving relations with you. These flags just don't work the way they are.

Re minors declaring war on you:
I have not had this in a while since they are a lot rarer than earlier patches but last time I had that happen I immediatly talked to them offered peace and they gave me 3 real tasty techs to boot. shortest war ever

lol, yeah they're really stupid these minors... I also had this happen a couple of times, minors declaring war on me because they feel threatened by my transports. They declare war-next round I offer them a peace treaty I they greatly except that for a 1000bc or so. 10 turns later they declare war again, I offer peace for a 1000bc etc etc etc....

While I haven't suffered from TPORS (Transport Proximity OverReaction Syndrome), it sounds like it'd probably be a good idea to have it so you can set up a "Right of Passage" agreement, which would allow the involved parties to send troop transports, and other military vessels, through each other's territory without fear of creating an intergalactic incident.

Since starbases were also mentioned, I'll note that it'd probably be a good idea to make it so no one can build starbases in foreign territory without permission (especially since the related UP resolution always gets voted as "no tax"). When an AI tries to build a starbase in your territory, the game would center on the location, and a window would pop up (to the side or in a corner, of course--gotta see where they're building) asking if you will allow the Snathi or whoever to build such-and-such a starbase there. Of course, you'd have to go through that red tape yourself when building starbases in AI territory.
