taskbar applications customization

on the startmenu (or specifically the taskbar where all the programs that you have running are listed) is it possible to remove the text from the text from all the applications button and just have the icon. You are thinking, well then you don't know what is open because there is no text. But, instead of text is there a way that when you hover your mouse over the icon to make a small display of the window of the application show above the icon? I have so many windows open that it is hard to keep track of all of them. Please let me know...this would be like having a small display of the window when you use alt-tab.

WindowFX can do that - give you a thumbnail of the window as the tooltip.

I don't know about icon-only Toolbar buttons - that might be possible, but I'd have to play around with SKS awhile to see if it could be done. I've adopted a vertical taskbar to get around that problem - you just set the width of the taskbar so that only the icon shows. The system tray looks a bit funky, though.

It might be possible to do something similar with a bottom/top taskbar, but I'm not quite sure how - maybe using the "true size" option for painting the button, but I haven't tried that.
