Campaign game

I bought GalCiv2 last week, made it thru the system set-up dance (thanks to this VERY helpful forum!!) and started a sandbox game on a huge map as the Terrans. After several hours of Xplore and Xpand I got the urge to blast something so I switched to the Campaign game. I was building up my little empire in normal mode and at the point when I was building my first Defender ships the dirty Drengs attacked my newest colony with transports!! I checked the tech tree and found it would take 50+ turns for ME to research the transports... but I could not let the insult go, so I pressed the TURN button 50 times (without doing any other actions) and got the transport tech. Of course at that point I had a big bankroll so I bought the needed transports, and with a few Defenders invaded and conquered all the Dreng planets!!!!!

It just seemed a little odd that something as basic as a transport is so far up the tech tree and pressing the turn button so many tmes was BORING, but it was all worth it to kick the Drengs butts!!!
Is there a better way to do this campaign thing??? Any input is appreciated.

Planetary invasion is a major annoyance in the campaign, because you have to research it in practically every mission. Many missions, it's pretty much the only tech you need at all.

One thing that does confuse me, however, is why it took you 50 turns to research it. It isn't a cheap tech to get, but for me it never seems to be more than 15 turns or so. Is your spend rate at 100%? How much is concentrated on research? Do you have any research labs?

yap, the time to research is faster when lab building exist, spending for researd and industry usage is increased.
but careful though you income will also affected.
my game already reach the salvage mission and curently atacked by dread and got no clue how to speed up the game.
reseach: medium hull (p invasion & bombrdment completed)
income: 65 /wk
spending : max 4 research

where is planet Uthon anyway....down to the south?, near ally's planet? or west of the map.

50 Turns!? Somethings not right, either theres not enough labs in your empire or your military/soc/research are out of whack in research or your industrial capacity is not at full 100%.. or all the above.

No118 , Supreme Shogun - thanks for the respond

My settings were: Taxation 50% Spending 50% Military 33% Social 33% Research 34%
Build order: Factory - Starport - Xeno lab - Market - EnterNet - farm
No Embassy, I used Laser to spread my Influence!!!!
It was a long war and by the time I invaded the Dreng's last colony I had a Bush league Approval of 39%

I plan to try the next mission this weekend.. any tips or advice woul;d be great

A tip is to not have the same build order for all planets (especially that one) and instead actually build what the planet needs and when it needs it, often depending on what you want to do with the planet and of course bonus tiles. Start by building a couple factories so that you get a good production on your planets, that will decrease the time it takes to build everything else. If you want to have decent research, you will obviously need more then one lab per planet or have some dedicated research planets.
Always increase your spending to 100% turn 1. And it's often a good idea to buy the first factories and/or colony ships on your starting planet. Use your money because you can be sure that the AI will use his. Alternatively, you can buy an entertainment center turn 1 & lower your tax so that you have 100% approval on your planet which means that you get a 100% population-growth bonus there and then try to keep it that way as long as possible. A high population is always good since that increases both your taxes and influence.
