I have the same problem. Seems to happen when loading large games with lots of stuff in them. Looks like we'll be restricted to smaller maps and fewer races until this gets fixed.

so its a mem leak. crap. thanks for the link bro.. will keep an eye on it... peace tooth.

Guys, it's almost certainly NOT a memory leak.

I attached the Visual Studio debugger when the game crashed. The crash is in GalCiv2.exe and for you programmers out there, here's what I found: the call stack showed the top 15 or so stack frames, all of which were in GalCiv2.exe, except for a few in ntdll and kernel. No directX or direct3d dlls were in the stack.

Obviously, I don't have any source code or symbols, but based on the above information I can say with relative confidence that it's almost certainly a problem in the GalCiv code....might be that the game is generating corrupt save game files, or possibly it's a null-pointer access in the save game loading code. But that's just speculation...it could be any number of things. However, it's VERY unlikely that it's a hardware driver problem or a memory leak (since it happens on a clean start of GC2).

I've referred it to Stardock support....twice. I've had the problem since 1.1b2. They finally responded to me after two weeks only after I sent several emails inquiring about it. They said they're looking into it, and I bloody hope it gets fixed because what's the point in investing time in a game if you can't reliably save and load your games? Between the two games where this happened, I've lost about a total of about 30 hours of gameplay (they were on Gigantic maps and I couldn't load either of them, except for early saves towards the beginning of the game.)

I've been a GC player since GC I and I wrote a long post earlier defending the SD devs, but I can't do that on this one. This is a critical/stop-ship bug, it's 100% reproducible, and it's been in the code for weeks. Brad himself said that there's no excuses for the game to be crashing if it's caused by their code. I appreciate the sentiment and the SD devs dedication to fixing these problems, but I am just not going to start any more games living in fear that when the game inevitably crashes from memory leaks that I might lose my game forever because I can't load any of the save games.

I want to start playing again, because GC2 is a great game....but working around this bug is just too much.

...might be that the game is generating corrupt save game files, or possibly it's a null-pointer access in the save game loading code...

I think this dev post supports this idea, and I think that it is causing some memory issues as well:

Well, a lot of things are possible. As I said, I don't have access to the devs' source code or symbol files, nor do I know how GC2 is architected, so there's very little (if anything) I can state definitively that doesn't amount to wild speculation.

All I can do is draw reasonable inferences from what I observe when the game crashes when I try to load my save games and from what I see in the VS debugger. Anything is possible, but I don't think it's a memory leak problem. Here's my reasoning: Leaks that cause crashes typically take a very long time to build up. As Cari wrote, you keep on allocating memory and either not freeing it or constant allocation/deallocation ends up fragmenting the RAM to the point that requests for dynamic memory blocks of a particular size fail because there are no contiguous blocks of free RAM of that size, and it's very common to not check to see if "malloc" failed. But given that most machines have boatloads of RAM (my machine has 2GB) and everyone has a virtual memory disk/page file, the amount of RAM on your system is considerable. If my save game crash is the result of a memory "leak", I would likely hear my hard disk going into conniptions trying to swap memory to disk in a futile effort to allocate memory. That does not happen. Also, a crash caused by a memory leak is going to be inconsistent...in other words, the point in galciv2 where you crash is going to depend on how much RAM is unallocated on your entire system when you run GC2. That includes RAM used by the OS and all programs running on your system, and the state of your system memory will be different every time you run GC2. In a nutshell, your debug.err is going to look different from crash to crash. But that is not the case with this crash...my debug.err is identical every single time, even with different save game files. It crashes in exactly the same spot in the load sequence, which suggests it's not a leak, but a specific line of code that's causing the problem.

Again, I can't say what exactly is causing the problem because I don't know what it is and I don't claim to know. All I can say is that everything I've directly observed so far suggests programmer error. Could it be something else, perhaps even something specific to my personal machine, like a video driver? Sure it could be, but the balance of probability is that it is not.

I just want the bloody bug fixed. Heck, I'll set my machine up for remote debugging and let the SD devs examine the crash directly on my machine if they think it'll help them diagnose the problem.

well, if it corrupts the save files, i have a game i can not access. i have 4 diff saves for it covering about a 2 hours time frame. none of them will load and its all saves on the same game. So my question is if i have 4 diff saves from diff times why are all 4 not loading. Its a weird problem. .....shrug..... driving me nuts tho, i was having a blast in that game.... peace tooth.

Well, I have the same problem and it's very annoying!

Crash because of memory leak happened only once but this BUG with loading of saved game happens every time I load!

And I also noticed it happens if the save file is bigger or eqal to 10MB!

9MB save works flawlessly but when game gets bigger than 10MB it never loads again!

I played gigantic map and made 170 turns when game became unplayable because of memory problems (PF was 1.5GB) and I saved it and never load again!

AND another bug! (or feature maybe? )

I play Battle of Gods scenario and when it comes to screen where I choose opponents it has always 8 opponents selected!! Neither I can select them or change their intelligence or relations! Nothing works on that screen except Next button and to globally select intelligence! I could post you a screenshot if you didn't understand...

In normal game scenario everything works fine!

I'm crazy ybout those two bugs because I can't play gigiantic map becaouse of load game bug, and I can't use smaller maps with fewer civs becaouse of this opponents bug! Or feature
Game is GREAT!! but these two bugs are very annoying... Hope to get fixed soon...

Loading WORKS when I put GalCiv in windowed mode!

Try it

Yup, I've got this problem too. I always run windowed mode ... so that's not a viable solution. Maybe I should try running fullscreen and loading it.
