Sensors?

While playing multiple games, multiverse or not, I notice that the sensors are always dropped off to the side. Either I'm focused on tech upgrades, ship weapons, or expanding my influence\diplomacy. But I noticed that the computer ignores it just as much.

So my question is this, are sensors any good? If so, why does the computer itself ignore them?

sensors are good at start for some fat cargo hulled survey ships, i usually got 2-4 11 speed surveys befgore the firsdt council. On big maps its craaazy

I find they aint much good unless you need to explore. I usually like to play abundant habitable worlds, so exploration isn't so pressing as colonization at the start of the game. It really makes a difference on big, sparse maps though. Load up cargo hulls with engines and sensor kits and you'll have a very good fast exploration fleet. The other good thing is that you get survey modules an can pick up those anomalies with the survey ships early on instead of waiting for the slow-old flagship to putter its way around.

Interesting. Usually Sensors 4 is one of the first things I do to get Eyes of the Universe.

I had some unpleasent suprises coming at me out of sensor range. I need to be faster and see farther than my enemies to successfully outmeauver them. I tend to focuse my forces rather then splitting them...

I'll usually research Sensors early to get the Survey module. I may build a handful of survey or reconnaissance ships with this technology, but for the most part I ignore the Sensor branch until I'm ready to build Eyes of the Universe on one of my planets. The sensor techs are cheap, and the Eyes are crazy powerful.

I have started to purposely avoid the sensor path because the higher techs are so powerful; I find it gives me too big of an advantage over the aI in Tough level games since they do not research them; knowing their every move is just a bit too cheesy for my taste. Of coarse, when I go up to a harder level that may change....trying Challenging now without it.
