Did I Miss Something?

Okay, simple situation here- I'm new. And I stink at this. Or at least I seem to.

First real game with the full version, me as the Yor, everyone else on a Large map except for the Iconians, who somehow didn't get clicked. Guess they didn't want to play along. It didn't take long for everyone to grab all the planets, and things just kinda went downhill from there. Not immediately, mind you, but there just wasn't much chance for me. There was always someone bigger and tougher while I tried to establish a trade-and-diplomacy empire. Then about midgame the Arceans just sort of exploded, with a huge portion of the minimap turning bright yellow. I had them as allies, but that didn't help much. In fact I had everyone as allies- except the Altarians. The Altarians whom I'd courted throughout the game to try and reach favorable terms but never could. Friendly would persist a turn, no more.

Then I tried to attack, and I discovered the Altarians had somehow gotten ahold of some powerful guns, which was enough to overcome my defenses and put me in a stalemate situation. That lasted long enough that the Arceans had the 10-round countdown, which no one was in a position to deal with.

So I'm wondering- is there any sort of general strategy guide to follow here?

And while I'm at it- how do you get the Minor Races to show up in the game? I've not seen them at all.

Beginners guide here: https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=164&AID=104908

Give it some time. You'll be conquering the galaxy before you know it.

What you described with the Arceans is probably them going after influence/culture victory. I would have went to war with them or bribe some allies to. Most likely try getting the Altarians involved so they would have been weakened a bit also.

That's some specific advice I can give, but I also agree with CTB. The beginner's guide is good stuff. You need a solid start with your empire to get off on a good footing.

Also have fun and enjoy yourself. My first dozen games were testing various difficulty levels and how I liked them as well as races.

If you had allied everyone but the Altarians, get them all to kill the Altarians. Once they (Altarians) die, you win.

I got the game a week ago and I'm already doind the same thing the Arceans are. Dont worry, as it has already been stated you will be conquering the galaxy in no time

Colonize as many planets as possible as quickly as possible without going bankrupt and build a farm and a factory and if you can a science lab all with the first 5,000 credits.

Tried that. I got a couple people to go against them (Korx, Drengin) but everyone else was simply saying, "Who? We don't know them. We'll face down these two we know, though." Drengin didn't appear to do anything at all, and the Korx were getting hammered.

Tried that. I got the Terrans to go after them, as they were rated for the best militarily. Unfortunately they seemed content to be conquered- I didn't see anything happening on that front. I was already committed to the Altarian war, so I didn't really have anything to spare to try and take the Arceans' planets. Especially not with the sheer number of planets they had.
