Stuck with icons

I can't find out where to change from the icons to the models for the ships and planets, and no matter how far in I zoom, all of the ships appear as small squiggles and the planets as small white and black circles. I hope I haven't overlooked something, but I haven't found an option for this in the video menu or the back of the manual. Is this a bug or have I missed something important?

Change the 'tactical view zoom level' slider in the interface tab in the options. IIRC, all the way down makes it stay on, all the way up makes it stay off. Just set a balance that suits you, I'm not sure what the default is.

The default is 25 I think.
