Is it just me, or does it tend to look like any reasonably-sized battle devolves into a game of 3d 'Bumper Cars'? .. All of the ships just seem to collide into each other and stop, then slowly break away from the others, only to almost immediately collide again.

It's really kind of silly looking.

I like to think of it as a lava lamp with death rays and stuff.

You made my spill my drink over my keyboard.

Actually... That'd be pretty sweet merchandise. I'd buy a lava lamp with little plastic GalCiv ships floating around in it, wouldn't you?

wouldn't you?

ONLY if it have little Missiles and bullet looking things flying around in it and maybe little "beams" (sticks) of red plastic to look like lasers

Try cinematic mode first 1/2 speed . Turn off the stats and guess at what is going on.

The top 1 or top 2 mode to get an overview. Turn the stats on.

Then use the free camera mode with click and drag to rotate the battle so that you can see the lines ofo ships approaching each other.

These views make it look more like a death ballet. I admit it still looks a little silly, but at 1/2 speed the weapons look cooler.

In my current game, I've nearly maxed out the missles tech - Photonic II or something - and unforutnately they travel so slowly that when they "impact & explode" their target has long moved on... so they're "impacting" on empty space...

looks really goofy.

Ah well, its a great game, and this part of it is definitely not the most important : D

I think my computer cant cope with the 3D battles, the game locks for a second when things explode lol

Strange because it runs rome total war fine something has gone wrong!!

I find the best way to watch the battles is at double speed, they are more like starwars style battles then, with everything moving super fast. Its great.

Its not that the combat looks strange or goofy. Its just that space aged warfare takes place on a much higher intellectual plane than we 21st century lifeforms have the capability to comprehend. So to us, it appears goofy, but to the pilots and bridge crew, their tactics and movement makes perfect sense.
