Warning system

Anyone else think a warning system, of when an enemy ship comes through your borders that you would be notified, would be a good idea?

currently playing a gigantic map, abundant everything, and spotting enemy colours on the minimap is a nightmare! (although trying the tactical view might help... just thought!)

Oh, and an option on the minimap just to display certain races ships!

I think it'd be a good idea, but only if you're at war with that race. You'd still have to keep your eye open for sneak attacks and you won't be constantly spammed by messages about where the ships are.

The best I have been able to do is create a line of high-powered sensor vessels so that most of the edge of my civilization is covered. Each one usually has 12+ sensor range and decent speed (6+), so this is a mid-game endeavor for me. I try to keep a couple of extras around for when I flip a border planet, too.

I put the ships on Guard or Sentry mode, which keeps them out of the movement rotation until an enemy vessel comes near them. Crude, but it works for me; I call it the DEW (Distant Early Warning) line, like the old string of radar stations that would warn us when the Soviets launched a missile strike. Yes, it's meant to detect a Rush...

An improvement on your idea of an alert, above, would be if the warning came when an armed vessel came within X parsecs. Otherwise, every scout, colony ship, flagship, and constructor would set it off. Urgh.
