Ship to ship combat graphics

I have the show ship combat checked.

When I do have ship combat, I expected I would see a full screen of ship combat (like with planet invasion.

Instead all I see is some tracers going back and forth on the regular screen with an occasional explosion
(presumably if a ship blows up.)

Is this what I am supposed to see?

No. You should see the actual ships flying around shooting at each other. (Although the Tiny hulls are so small, they can be practically invisible compared to the larger hull sizes. I haven't ever done a Tiny vs Tiny battle to see if the overall view scales up or not.)

It zooms in unless tehy spread up. You can also use different camera modes to get different views but normally i just leave it on Top down 1. I just love a fleet logistic 40 with a bunch of tiny hulls! strap some missles on them and fast movement rate and you have nothing to fear but fear itself!

There are options under the "Interface" tab(think thats it) that should say something like full fleet battles or what not. There are a few options. Theres also a check that will make fleetbattles only show on full if both sides are fleets.

What do I have to do to see this? Zoom in? Or am I setting something wrong in my preferences?
Right now I usually have only one ship attacking. Occassionally the defenders have one or more
ships.

go to your preference - interface tap and uncheck the "only show battle when both sides are fleets" box.

What I am asking is this: is there a separate screen for ship to ship combat?

If so, what am I doing wrong in the preferences? I have checked "Always watch player ships in battles."

You need to make a fleet to see it the way you want to. Single ship combat remains on the main screen, and fleet combat goes to the combat viewer.

To make a fleet you overlap two or more ships and then click on them. Select all the ships and click the Make Fleet button.

Just uncheck the 'only display full battles wihen both sides are fleets' option. Then, if you have full battles on, all battles will go to a different screen and your ships and theirs will fly around shooting each other.
