Pirates

Do pirates exist because ive never seen one in a total of 4 games. The event comes up saying pirates are appearing and other races are at war with them but never see them. Why is this??

They do exist. Sooner or later the UP will pass a resolution to place a prison colony on somebody's homeworld. This creates the possibility that the prisoners will escape, at which point they become ridiculously powerful pirates. If you're fortunate enough to be playing a militaristic strategy and you're far enough along that you have fairly powerful weapons you can nail them, but if not, well... run away...

I've seen them in all of two games. First time was at least mid-game and they had a dreadnaught and a couple battleships fleeted up. Second time was my current game...fairly early game and they were 3 heavy fighters. Considering no one had any military at the time, this was fairly tough. Considering the council voted the prison on my homeworld and I now had 3 heavy fighters taking out my starbases, it was much worse. Still, I was able to take them out one at a time...resulted in a 20 turn delay for me to make fighters instead of constructors and another 20 turn delay to replace my starbases, but it could have been worse.

There should be more pirates, less powerful, who attack your freighters, starbases and others

I agree. I don't really understand equating pirates with escaped convicts.

Heh, imagine if pirates attacked ships and disabled them, and stole weapons or defenses. Maybe give them the ability to destroy engines down to some fraction of their original move-rate, at which point they're considered disabled and the pirates can pillage some piece of equipment and make their escape.

Now THAT would be piracy... yarrr...

I had Mars gain the prison in my first game, at the first UP meeting. The very next month the prisoners broke out - 2 fighters and a hvy fighter, all very powerful for how early they spawned.

Never saw them again.

I've seen two pirate ships in one other game - they killed my scout, to which I sent a fleet to deal with them. I was confused, because I thought it was another race, but couldn't figure out who I was at war with!

I saw them in the first game I played, but it was near the end, right after I decided to start taking out the other races. (I should have started on a higher difficulty level, but I wanted to test out the game.) I was so far ahead of all the other races by the time the pirate dreadnaught showed up, I sent 3 dreadnaughts after it, lost 2 of them, but I had another 8-9 en route.

There should be more encounters with them though.

Wait, it was a bad thing I voted to have it on one of my planets?

Only if they break out. I always vote for it because of the 50% production increase for 3 years. Pirates can be fairly destructive, but the bonus is worth the risk, IMHO.

i ve seen pirates a few times.....a couple from prison breaks and then twice something bout pirates have a bade in the area....i was about mid game and all i had was beam weapons researched and they showed up with a fleet of 20+ ships and they were very very strong beam and missile and the other weapons and really good shields,,,took well near if not over a 100 turns and countless lost ships to dispose of them....the ones from the prison breaks were easy to contend with compared to the ones that just spawned up from nowhere.....be glad if ya dont see them...espeasically if you are at war on two sides when they get there....nearly lost that game...not enough ships to take care of the business at hand

Well thanks for the replys a massive influx. I was wanting to see them to get my ships more experianced in battle but by the sound of it dont want to see them much now lol.

I will be ready, a seperate anti pirate force will be created for the elimination of any pirates that show up hehe.

Thanks

I've never had the pleasure of running into any pirates in the half dozen games I've played so far. I kinda' hope I never do.

it would be better if pirates could have a base, so they will keep comming untill its taken out. it should be a starbase ihmo
that way it would be easier to tackle but still represent a cool base.

I ran into "naturally occuring" pirates once. They had two battlships and three heavy fighters and at that time I had the most powerful ship in the major races (frigate class.) Thing couldn't hold a light to that stack. They were in Icronian space so I let them be.

I had a huge pirate fleet appear mid game at the level below tough. The problem was, it just stayed in one square and never moved. Until I built and massed several fleets of ships that could handle it - when one got within sensor range a few of the pirate ships moved towards it - but since they only had 3 range sensors they could not see my other fleets which were about 6 squares away. (I had EoU). The next turn I massacred them.

I encountered them once very early in the game. I had a squadron of early generation fighters and one tricked out military star base. I got the message that they were out there and BAM! there were two stacks of them floating placidly in the influence of my star base. They never knew what hit em

I haven't seen pirates yet, but I have seen a minor race spontaneously appear. It was sort of like a pirate encounter since it was an extremely militant race and, judging from the description at least, was spontaneously formed solely to destroy the Drengin. I was Terran, but I killed them anyway. They really weren't all that powerful either. Oh and I always vote to have the prison on my planet.

Of course pirates exist, didn't you hear about the recent starforce controversy ?

Seriously though, pirates ARE exceedingly rare. Kinda sad, actually. I wouldn't mind having to deal with them once in a while.

I had the Pirates appear in my most recent game. Their ships were impressively powerful. However, my fleets were better, what with the psionic beam weapons.

I was basically dicking around with that game by that point though, I was allied with 2 of the remaining civs, and had close relations with the last one. I did have the fundamentalists show up in that game earlier. But they had only 1 of my planets (playing Arcean as evil), which I retook the turn after they appeared.

What I wonder is how often poeple encounter the internal revolution where a bunch of their own planets break away due to having your morale in the crapper for too long? First time I saw it, I was playing as the Dregin, and they new civ was the "Free Dregin". It happened in one of my very early games before I figured out the importance of morale. Out of boredom, I took my civ, which had 100 percent morale and plenty of income, and deliberately tanked my economy and morale to force it to happen.

After about 30 turns, and demolishing every morale structure and later, nearly every stock exchange, leasing ships, and having the 1% morale reduce my population across 49 or so planets to 16 billion total, it finally happened, and the Free Arcean's showed up.

Given that most people who post here probably manage to mantain high morale in all their games, I wonder how often this event is seen?

I voted to have the prison in my territory... figured it was bad when the other 2 races voted that I have it aswell...

when the pirates formed, I think Id discovered a ranger ship previous which could handle them.

I had a revolt on one of my planets and they broke away and formed their own collective. Fun. As soon as the aliens started kicking their butts I began trading with them.

As for pirates- I always have the prisoners on my planet every vote. I like the bonus. Oddly enough, when the pirates show up they're always attacking the other races! 2 in one game. Pretty cool, actually. I guess the pirates are afraid of me since I'm actually more evil than they are (alignment wise)
