is there a way to break alliances ?

i would like to break my alliance with the Arceans to get a conquest victory but I dont see an option for it in the diplomacy screen
and there is no chance of anyone declaring war on them which would let me refuse to honor the alliance

It is in the Foriegn Relations screen. Under the first tab.

I think the only way you can break an alliance is to refuse to assist them if they are attacked or fire on them.

I could be wrong, I am an isolationist and I never ally except to take a diplomatic victory hwn they are all close.

No, there is a check box to break one in the Foriegn Relations Screen. Easy to do.

If you wait long enough, you get assassinations of faction heads, and that automatically breaks your alliances...pretty crappy way to get it though. I had wiped out half the other factions, and was allied with the alt's and the tor's when within probably half a dozen rounds, both faction leaders were assassinated, and the replacement leaders blamed my faction and declared war.
So I crushed them both...it's lonely at the top.

Dang, I wish I knew of the options to break alliance earlier.

First peace with my enemy..
Pay my allies to peace.
Pay enemy to go to war with my ally.
Say no to allies request to assist.
Than pay my other ally to peace with the enemy.
Pay the enemy to attack the other ally and refuse to help.
Just to get a military victory.

Hmm... its more interesting that way but.... it was expensive doing that.
