Issue with upgrading ship designs in shipbuilder

Old design 'auto-obsoleted'

I was playing with the latest update last night, and I noticed something that I believe happened because of the new ability to upgrade the core ships. When I update an existing design, the old design simply disappears, without any notification. I was expecting the old design to still be available until I either told the shipbuilder to delete or obsolete the design.

I should note that the design I was working with was not a core design.

Did you save the new design under a different name?

Yes I did. The original design *poofed* aftwerwards. Should be easy to repro. Just start up a game, create a ship, then update the ship. I'm at work, so I can't test atm.

I update designs all the time and have yet to have my base design poof.

Beta 3 right? It's a feature I believe. One that REALLY needs a toggle. There might be one in the options, haven't had time to play it yet.

Yeah, this is a 'feature' in beta 3, and I agree completely that this should DEFINATELY havea toggle option, just like the option to remove components when upgrading ships...

"Remove components when upgrading ships" is an option. It's under "Ship Designer" in the Options screen. It's only in v1.1 Beta 2 and 3 though.

I've made the change. It will no longer auto-obsolete your original design when you upgrade.

the odd thing that i've seen in beta3 when updating Core ships, when the "Remove Components" option is off, is that the non-removed components don't appear in the components list at the top of the viewing window... so i end up just clearing the design and starting over from scratch.

anyway, i'd love it if i had the config option of having all designs be auto-obsoleted when i upgrade, since it's what i always do to them anyway... although i suppose having it not be automatic gives me the option of deleting them instead?

it'd also be nice to not have to click the "no! i'm using those ships, please don't scrap them!" option on the dialog that pops up ever time i obsolete a design... it's like the dialog for "do you wish to upgrade this starbase" that constructors get... just another thing that i always need to click in the same place, that slows me down.

if the constructor/starbase dialog can be removed with a config option, how about giving the same option for the "scrap all?" dialog?

Yay Codecritter!

Pedxing, I'll give you an quick example of why I prefer to not auto-obsolete the ship. When I make a ship, especially if I just hit a new size/capacity, I first create a design with the jewelry only, the look that I want for a specific ship class. I save it, then add the appropriate modules, typically weapons and defenses. When dealing with a different enemy, I go back to the base design, upgrade and add a different assortment of weapons/defenses.

With the auto-obsolete, the base design was gone and if I used the decked out warship as a template, I'd lose a design that was still useful to me.

Sorry, you probably already knew all that and didn't mind .

I feel there should be a provision to retrieve obsoleted designs in the ship designer.

true... i didn't mind.

but i see where you're coming from! it's why having the option be controlled by a checkbox would be ideal... most of the game, when we're just updating becasue we have better equipment, it could stay on, but then on turns when we wanted to do template-based tricks we could turn it off.

or maybe add another dialog, at the end of saving the upgrade? "do you want to obsolete the original design?" and control that with a checkbox option? that might be more dev work that could better be spent elsewhere, though... like adding the checkbox option to skip the scrapping dialog when making something obsolete?

edit: and yes! being able to bring back obsoleted designs would be huge! i accidentally obsoleted the wrong design last night, and had to rebuild it from scratch.
