Starbases and Trade

Hello,
I've been reading mixed suggestions about how to place economy starbases. Some people seem to think it works like GC1 where you had to put bases along a trade route. Others think you should stack them near the planet where the route starts.
So I can't really narrow down the answer to this.
Do I place econ.bases along a trade route? Or they only matter to the planet of origin so I should stack them up there?
