c4d would do rather nicely, i've done a few text renders with it, you can see them here Link

3D Studio Max, Maya, Blender.
That scene is quite simple. Square blocks with rounded edges and raytracing.
I haven't tried it my self, but from what I hear Cinema4D apparently got some nice premade materials. It sound like it's easier to learn than 3DSMax and Maya so if you have never done 3D modeling before you might want to try C4D first.
Mind you, Blender is free.

Blender is free.

It may be free but it definitely will involve a "Learning Curve"...

I downloaded it, opened it up, it definitely is a world apart from the normal graphics progs.. It is mainly hotkey based, so thats one minor thing to learn (the Hotkeys and what they do, theres ALOT of them, LoL) on top of everything else, cameras, duplicating, rendering and Mesh modeling...etc..etc..

Also the program doesnt seem to play nice with ALOT of graphics cards...
Im using an Asus with an ATI chipset and it seemed to be "Ok" for the short time I screwed around in the program...but apparently my card is known to have poor performance with Blender, according to the listing at the site, just something you may also want to consider.....

I did browse the art galleries of images made from the program..pretty cool stuff!...

Just thought I would share my so far "Brief" Blender experience..
