Allied Starbases

So I was replaying the campaign, and I noticed that my allies (particularly the altarians) kept putting economy starbases smack dab next to my planets, even though they didn't have nearby colonies. This kind of ticked me off at first but, as they weren't influence bases my influence didn't take a hit, and then I noticed that the computer was loading them up with the +production/social/research modules. I couldn't tell because I didn't notice the modules until they had already been built for a few turns, but will those bonuses actually affect my colonies in range? And, if so, will military starbases give bonuses to all allied ships as well?

They will effect your colonies if a UP resolution has been passed to allow them too. Otherwise, the only reason to have econ bases in your space is to improve the yield of their trade routes.

Hmm, well this was in the campaign, so the UP hadn't really come into it. Come to think of it, the ai-played races didn't have any freighters either.

1) This is a campaign, they are "teamed" with you, and you can't blow them away, even if you really wanna.

2) There is no "trade" line of technology in the campaign, so there is no reason for his starbase to be there.

3) "Team", in my experience doesn't offer starbase benefits. I may be wrong, but I remember the Altarians getting slaughtered in the range of my Military bases all the time, so I'm thinking it doesn't.

4) The best way to deal with this is to buy the starbase in question off of them. Then you got a new starbase, and you don't have to be so ticked off.

The other reason to make economy bases is to increase the basic research/production values of the planet, not just trade routes. Those shouldn't do any harm, unless you absolutely must have a base where they have already placed one. In that case, you'd have to buy it from them, as suggested earlier. I personally wouldn't fork out the money to buy them unless there's a really good reason for it.
