ship upgrade system

why the change ?

in the 'retail' version upgrading a ship presented the old design for revision.

in the new 1.1 as well as the latest 1.x or what ever its called this system is replaced with a new one.
when you upgrade a ship you are presented with the old ship striped of all but the 'jewlery' to compleatly re work it from the ground up.

The main problem is that it does not feel like 'upgrading' a current design. It feels more like linking the new and old in a way that can easily be attained with the governers page.in othe words the ships that come out do not feel related. If there is some button that allows me to retain all the parts from the old design for the first stage of redesing lets here where it is hidden. Otherwise the only way to retain my sence of 'story' is with a pencil and paper. Write down the design and rebuild it only to take it apart again.

Id like to know if this change had a purpose, or if it was in error.

Many have complained about the new upgrade system.

Some prefer the new way.

And some have asked for something in between. Like have the clear button strip out the functional parts, or maybe tie it to the new grid filters that are in the 1.1 beta.

What I haven't seen is someone from stardock giving us a "yes we'll do that", "not at this time", "we'll think about it", or "never ever so stop asking".

SD is great at listening, so for now we can only wait and hope

I agree w/ Citizen Kes.. Would love to be able to start my upgrade process with the old ship exactly as it was...

The problem was when you get to late game, huge hulls, and enourmous weapons and defence on the ship, it was a pain to remove all of the weapons on the ship, especially when you have about 8 that need upgrading, finding and moving them was a bitch. So the upgrade button auto stripped everything.

Yeah but late in game its annoying to have to replace everything when all you're doing is changing the engines out.

well if all you wanted to change out was the engines just wait like most of us do till you ahve some improved weapons or defenses to add too.

I rather like the new way of it, because it also allows me to change bits of jewelry to reflect a partial design change - after all, sequential upgrades of real life units look similar, but not EXACTLY like, the original unit. Josh_88's suggestion of waiting until improved weapons or defenses come along to add those as well. If you upgrade every time you get a new weapon, engine or defense, you soon become inundated with ship designs that may not be visible, but may become so the next game you play.

A compromise option might be useful however - giving the player the option to strip off parts or not would certainly be useful...

my games never get to the 'late stages'. if i get to huge hulls, you can bet i wont need to upgrade it. the other day i tried a game with hundreds of systems, and having to write down my ship designs just made the whole thing to complex to play. At least i can down grade my version for game where this is very much needed.

So far has stardock said this was an intentional change, or a bug ?

It was intentional.

This mostly gets to me when I only want to switch out my shields for point-defense. I don't want to have to remember how many mass-drivers I had, did I have 1 or 2 warp drive engines... did this thing have sensors? I forgot. I just wanted to counter my enemies missles...
