researching is not worth it

researching is not worth it

Hi.

What is the point of doing research? Getting more powerful weapons? Faster engines? No. The whole point is economics. It's either to generate more money or lower the cost of a product. Research is a project, and like all projects, you have to take into calculation cost vs benefice to determine if it is worthwhile.

However, in this game, the amount of money and time you have to invest to in building the labs, paying the upkeep, invest the money to generate research points is so big that there is no way i see for it to be worth doing it when you consider that you may replace these installations with factories or farms/economic buildings.

Did i say that technology is worthless? Not at all. I'm just saying that researching them is not efficient. Buy them, take them by force.

It's strange for me to say this, because in all other 5x games, i love doing research. My suggestion? The creator of the game should revise the benefits and cost of the technologies in the game.

Let me know what you think.

The developers of the horrible space conquest game that shall not be named (as it shames the name of those that came before) tried to expand the term from 4X to 5X.

We all know how that ended.

Funny on my forums it's referred to officially as "The Game That Shall Not Be Named."

Hah. Diplomacy is far better than research, and you can use the cash you make (you end up making many thousands of billions of credits more than any other race in the game, easily), to get new research/economic buildings.

And by the way, for all of you arguing that you never get ahead of the CPU players: You ALWAYS get ahead of the CPU players. Not a single one of them (except possibly the Torians) has every technology in the game. By buying from each race you end up getting a technological rating easily beyond 150 or 160. You can maintain it, too, as each alien race researches different technology.

It's also ridiculously profitable. I've maintained my empire's economy through hard times through borrowed cash and it works astonishingly well - even if your diplomacy level isn't the greatest.

I like how that is. Many 4x games are simply races up the tech tree - CIV for instance, if you get gunpowder units before others, it's a huge advantage.

In this, the tech tree is both really spread out and there really aren't any major jumps. Just a very gradual progression for the most part (perhaps excepting alignment weaponry)

Research not worth it? You've got to be kidding.

You obviously haven't seen a fleet of two heavy cruisers (large hull) equipped with high end beam weaopns or nanorippers (I LOVE nanorippers but only go the mass driver tree when nobody else is) and the good alignment defense systems slice through the entire navy of what the ratings said was the strongest military power in the game. Many so-called battles my cruisers didn't even take damage while massacreing their opponants. I'd consider it a bad battle if I took 4 points of damage. I'd do several battles each turn with fleets like that. The other race might as well have been unarmed. Sure they had a LOT of ships. According to the rating they should have walked all over me. Didn't work out that way.

Of course I had more then one fleet. My manufacturing was far above the others (because of my better social techs) by that point and I could churn out those suckers. The poor Drengin and Kor didn't stand a chance even though both had higher military ratings then I did. I almost felt sorry for them. I had dreadnaughts in the pipeline (huge hull) but they weren't really needed.

You won't get that kind of tech by trading with other races because you can never get better then them. If you want to have SUPERIOR technology you've got to roll up your sleaves, build the research centers and do it yourself.

In reality, I could said, my research are actually the paid out to me in turn of economic and treasury, even in influence. I often getting bigger portion of ratio spending on Research and emphasize on point extractions, later time with DPM related researches, you may find out in the later time, those Technology trade (instead of buying, but selling) you may find out those trades may actually help you in anyway, such as influence point, money and other worthy technology.

In my opinion, the tech purchase are not worthy, basically, unless you customize your race to be a highly DPM bonus race, I think, those trading are in fact too expansive. Some of those tech offer by the AI's you maybe find out in the later time, with a few turn of RSC high priority (strict Research in all Industrial planets, and splending ratio on research on high ), all those researchs can be easily make up.

And research is in reality the key essential, since if you have weaker ATK/DEF researches, and your ECO are not strong enough to support long term buyings), with a technological and manufacturing disadvantage, you basically won't be able to win the conflict.
