Don't want to use "Central"

I noticed that the latest patch is no longer on the game site.  There is a reference to use Stardock Central instead.  No offense guys, but I really don't want to install and use Central to get a game update.  I now have the CD and have had bad problems even understanding what "Central" was asking of me half the time.

Its real easy just to download the patch and install.  I have even removed "Central" from my system.  Overhead with no value to me.

I agree. I have no internet connection at home (where I've installed the game) and have no choice other than to download updates the old fashioned way - particularily since we're using Sun/Solaris at work. I bought the Collectors Editition, so I really want to be able to download the updates.

Hnefi -- Second that. Exact same reasons. Heck, I ain't got a home phone anymore. just my cell. All Inet at work etc.

Stardock -- Love the game. Don't get me in trouble with the boss by making me load stuff onto his computers. He'll fire me for it. Your game is good, but not worth my job.

I'm sure the final release of the 1.1 patch will be available from the downloads section - it's only in beta right now, so it makes perfect sense to not have it there yet.

The 1.0x update is still available in the downloads section - although, bizarrely, it is under the "Collectors Edition" sub-page.

Only thing you can do is wait till Stardock releases a stand-alone patch. They usually do a few hours to a few days after they release it on Central.

What does it say your current version is?

It is not out yet on SDC.

1.0X.010
That's the current version. That's why it says no updates available.

When the beta gets released, you'll see it there.

But the Journal ( Link ) said THIS WEEK! It's already Wednesday, doesn't that mean now??!!

Hopefully the "wink" lets you know I'm only kidding...

As i understand it, the Beta will be released in SD Central, but the final 1.1 patch will be released on both SDC and the site.

I Use SDC Anyhow (I use Object desktop and it's easy to keep all of OD's components updated at once) and as of about 3:00 EST the beta for 1.1 wasn't there yet

Do you have the "show pre-release version" or something similar on?

You need it to be able to download the beta.

Thing is, people can't get a hold of 1.0X because it's listed as legacy, yet 1.1 Beta isn't quite available yet.

Sure, kudos to Stardock for giving us the 1.1 version (even if it is only Beta) tomorrow (I think that's what they said in the feature request list...), but that's SUCH a long way away (Besides, having 1.0X available as it was a few days ago would help keep happy people who don't want to play a Beta, or who can't use SDC...)

I don't want to use SDC either.I just hope 1.1 will be on the download section once completed>

Because my copy of the game is pirated and I have no serial #...

SDC is one of the easiest thigns to use in the frikin world. There is no good reason not to use it.

While I can't agree that it's very user-friendly, I can understand why it exists. The whole point of SDC is to stop piracy, and it does it as painlessly as possible to the game purchaser. Anyone not willing to get patches via SDC should think about how bad it would be if programs like StarForce were used instead.

Its obvious that SOME are clueless that a licensed user like me was able to download the updates off the regular site. With my serial number!

SOME people should not assume that everyone else is clueless!

(or pirating software)

I happen to own the CD. I am a software developer.  I CAN use a computer.  Central is too much overhead for just simply updating my game.

I do not think SDC is as painlessly as possible for the user... Nor do I think it's all about stopping piracy (seems like it's awfully good at advertising Stardock's other products too...)

Besides, accessing the downloads on the website requires the serial number anyway, does it not...? And I'm sure the filesharing networks will get hold of the updated versions eventually, somehow...

I actually read very good things in a review of GCII, regarding the ease of updating... Perhaps getting many updates through SDC will be easier than getting many updates via more traditional means... but then, I'm still of the opinion that games should come in a working condition to begin with!

As a software developer, can you explain exactly what you mean by too much overhead?

Anyway, as has been said - it's a beta patch. The final patch will be here on the site like the other ones were and will allow any user to download it with a serial number. Given how difficult it seems some people consider Central to be, it's probably a very very good idea for them not to put a beta patch up here or there will be complaints about how it's broken, bugged etc etc etc.

Well I love SDC. 18 MB its worth for me that it tells me patch avaible, downloads it and installs it. Quite painless. But you can download patches as standalone you only need your serial number. You won´t be able to download betas that way and the small updates Stardock usally puts out "every" week. You will have to wait a little while longer until the file is compilde into a mayor update. The game is running without the patch many "updates" are really that improvements . At least it worked that way for GalCiv 1

BTW, one shouldn't forget that patch through SDC will be incremental wih the possibility of archiving current version.
The patch on the website will be total patch from retail version. So their size would increase

Whilst this all sounds good, there is still one vital point: The version 1.0X is now NOT available in the downloads sections where it is supposed to be (apparently it can still be found somewhere, though I've not seen this for certain myself).

V1.0X is now marked as obsolete, even though there is no V1.1 available to replace it. Even after V1.1 beta is released on SDC, the old V1.0X will, it seems, NOT be available to people who don't want to use SDC, for whatever reason.

Hopefully it's just a mistake on Stardock's part, and not the way of the future... (and before anybody gets the wrong idea, I use SDC and personally don't have an issue with it - but I can understand why some people would...)
