Terrans shafted?

It seems to me that playing as humans is more difficult than the other races. I'm slower getting colonies and I always seem to get less colonies than nearly everyone else. By reading the manual, and the history of the game I felt that humans would get an advantage in diplomacy and economics, but I only see a boost in economy. So my (lacking diplomacy skills here) and less technology than the other races leaves me in a big hole. Stellar Cartography, humans don't even start with knowledge of planets, which is fine by me, but the fact that humanity discovered hyperdrive, why don't they get that advantage?

If I'm right here don't the Yor start with Ion Drive? How is that possible? They just received Hyperdrive?

I'd appreciate any comments on humanity, or some starting strats for them. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I'm a bit partial to humanity surviving....

I have mostly played Terrans. They are not in anyway underpowered. For a start, you can customise all abilities yourself so you can make them what you want them to be. On colonisation, it is far more the players skill than the racial abilities (although these do help) - on larger maps I always start by research down the engine route and have an upgrade Coloniser for each step. I always massively outcolonise the other AI by at least double playing on Tough.

Just make sure you buy a lot of stuff. You can either focus on buying factories etc and specialise Earth towards Military production to crank out colony ships. Once you grab a planet with a decent PQ, buy a factory or 2 and build a starport so that you have doubled your speed at colonising. Alternatively, dont build up your military capacity - drop the slider to 0% at the start and build infrastructure instead then just rushbuy all your colony ships. Or use a combination of the above. I tend to start with the latter by rushbuying a load of ships by which time my infrastructure is good enough to push fast colony ships out every couple of turns.

Make sure that you redesign the starting colony ship and have 1 for each level of engine, then you dont need to mess around every time you research a new tech.

I found it amusing that humans invented hyperdrive, yet half the aliens have better engines at the start. Also all the alien's histories doesn't make much sense since they didn't have hyperdrive or universal translators yet.

Actually, as far as the story, it should be like Gal Civ 1. The Aliens have already had ships in space, been charting space, been around space due to the gates. The Humans just created a way to compact the gate technology and put it on the ship.
