Game Crash on Huge/Gigantic Map

Hello all,
First off, I'd venture to say this is not a bug, but rather something amiss on my rig. Perhaps someone here will recognize the problem and offer a solution.
Anyway: I'm experiencing DTDs about midway through games on Huge/Gigantic maps. The land grab is done, and I'm well into developing planets. I've got a sizeable force, and life is fairly decent for the Galactic Hounddogs. FWIW, I'm playing on Normal, with all map settings on default.

I'm really at a loss as to why it might be crashing on the larger maps. Anybody have any constructive ideas? Thanks in advance, and let me know if I can provide any more information.
