Are minor ship upgrades better than waiting for major overhauls?

So far, I’ve been playing at the various "please don’t hurt me" levels as I discover my way around the game. Some where in that discover process, I seem to have developed a tendency to make incremental updates to ships (like upgrading from speed 1 to 2, or adding a range extension module) as soon as available. I certainly feel a need to do this with colony and constructor class ships as a means of rapid expansion – but just wondering if you all see the same need (assuming playing within a "big" galaxy).
