How do you form alliances?

Seriously, how?

I've been trying to get the AI to ally me and I've never been able to do it. The only way i've ever had a team is if I set it up as a default. I research all the tech for alliances (I.e Alliance) and toss it to the race that are friendlies and nothing ever happens. Is there some command somewhere that I have to find for this or is just whenever the AI feels like it? i'm tired of giving 10k bc gifts.

Thanks

Your relations with the civ have to be "close" before you can ask for an alliance.

That works, but so do trade routes and other things. If you're going to attack one of their enemies, for example, tell them first in the diplomacy screen.

Lots and lots of gifts then eh?

Look at the "Report" for your target "ally" and see what you're minuses are, if any. I often have a problem with not having enough of a military, so I get a double minus, the computer just can't wait to crush my puny little empire.

heh! Same here! i never have any military, but I do have a really high missle weapon research level. Then, I get a "I'm going to crush your little empire"... *Pop*Pop*Pop* I have a few dozen warriors and PWN thier warriors and start moving in for the kill!

I always get "Close borders" and "Militiristic," things I can't really change except through influence. The militiristic one is odd because I never have any military...
