sdcentral won't connect, firewall not blocking

I'm repeatingly getting the "Connection Error 1001" when trying to connect with sdcentral.exe for the first time.

Zone Alarm is configured to allow total access to sdcentral, its loader and its activate.exe.

The WinXP SP2 firewall is disabled (off.)

I can ping stardock.com

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling sdcentral, i've tried rebooting (including a cold reboot), I've tried skipping the router and going out straight through the modem.

An interesting note: When I click "Cancel" on the "connection error 1001" dialog, instead of quitting the app goes back to the state in which it appears to be trying to contact the server. The only way to kill the app then is via the task manager.

Suggestions?

update: I stumbled upon the contents of C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\template.txt which looks useful. And judging from the contents of this KB article Link I'm guessing that sdcentral is supposed to be using template.txt to create login.txt. That file doesn't exist on my system. Is it perhaps only created when a successful login occurs, or should it be there regardless?

thanks for any suggestions.
