Newbie question about Trade Modules

Hi, I just got the game today, and I'm playing the first mission in the campaign ... for some reason, I don't seem to be able to equip any of my ships with a trade module? I don't even see this module in the ship designer ...

I already have the trade centre in place on my home planet ... am I missing something?

You need to research the "Trade" technology in the upper yellow area of the tech tree. The trade module isn't related to the trade centers you build on your planets.

You put the trade module on a ship hull and send that ship (a freighter) to a planet of another race, thus establishing a trade route. You have to research the trade tech first as mentioned above though. Once you get this down, you can start using economic starbases, etc.

Erm, ignore those other two responders.

The campaign has a slimmed down technology tree - Trade isn't available in it. That's why you can't research it, or build freighters, or, you know, Trade.

Oh my gosh. I wish this had been plainly explained in the manual. I've been "racking my brains", trying to figure out why Trade wasn't available to me, scanning the entire tech tree, searching the forums, and reading the wiki. Thanks so much for answering this question!

Yeah me too, my scalp is bleeding because I scratched my head so much trying to figure out how to get the trade module in the campaign. Thanks guys, once again the forum is a great help
