Trading (Diplomacy) screen question

I have a small question regarding this screen.

Say, If I trade one of my technologies for someone else's then does that mean I wont be able to use the technology I invented and traded. For example, I have ion drive engines researched and trade it with the altarians for beam technology, so does that mean I wont be able to put ion drives on my ship until I research that technology again?

I know its a stupid question but im kinda new to GalCiv universe

You keep your technologies when you trade them. The only thing you have to be carefull is not to give away something you may regret later. Let's says you are the only one having missile tech, if you give it away to the wrong people you migth find it used agains you.

Also, the tech that appears on the list is the tech your opponent doesnt have.
