Another simple interface recommendation

In the ship construction screen I expected to be able to hold the right mouse button and move the mouse and thus rotate the ship in all directions. However, holding right mouse button and moving mouse doesn't do anything. Instead I have to clumsily press those rotate buttons in the upper edge.

This mouse-rotating is very intuitive and I know it for example from mount&blade (the face editor).

the middle mouse button is used to rotate everything in the game, from the map, to the ship design screen, even to the little planets in the corner of your colony screen.
Basically, if it's 3d, it can be rotated with the middle mouse button.
cheers.

Ahh yes, but what if I don't have a third button? Lots of those mini laptop mouses don't have a third button or a scroll-wheel. And, of course, I am playing that thing on a laptop...

Is there something else that can be used OTHER than the middle mouse button? I have a "thumb button"on the side of my mouse but it's not registering as a middle button and there's no option to remap. That button does work for me for various functions in other games (have it set to enable autorun for WoW, for ex).

In UFO: Aftershock I remapped this functionality to my capslock key which I think is easier to use than a click and drag.

My scroll wheel works to rotate ships when I press and hold it down. I don't have a middle mouse button either.

For another interface suggestion, I wish there was a way to move the mini-map without scrolling out and then back in on it. Maybe I'm missing something.

you can left click on the map in an empty space and drag it. Much faster than side scrolling. You can also left click on the mini map to instantly go to a spot.
