Question About Accepting Surrender

What's the difference between surrender and a peace treaty?

I started a one-on-one game as the Drengins against the Terrans on a tiny map/simple difficulty. I thought it would be a quick and dirty way to learn the basics of combat. Anyway, after capturing 2 of their 5 colonies, they came to me with an offer of surrender. I accepted, thinking that would give me the win. Instead, it gave them an opportunity to build up their defenses, and my victory isn't going to come as easily as I thought.

A "Surrender" is different than "Lets end this War".  Did the message pop up in a little window or in the fullscreen trade window.

If they're asking for peace (aka in the trade window), and your really whooping them, make sure you try to get some free techs out of it
