Look here guinea pigs! I got beta food for you!

Look here guinea pigs! I got beta food for you!

Thank you very much people. I have taken the beta down from my site. I'll release the final version later this week as soon as I get time to do final tweaks. Keep posting suggestions until then if you got any.

If anyone with Windows 2000, ME or 98 want to test it let me know and I'll send it to you as I have not got any chance to try it on those systems.

Well, it's more of a release candidate really. Just want to see how it runs on other systems.

I've made an update to my Running Matrix screensaver and I'd like to see how well it works on other systems other than mine.

If you could spare a couple of minutes and give it a try. Mess about with the settings and stuff.
Then post back here with your report of any bugs and general performance.
Please include:
# Windows Version + Service Pack
# CPU (Type and speed. It'd be useful to know if you have multicore or Hyperthreaded CPU)
# Memory
# Monitor(s) Resolution
# Graphicscard (not sure if I really need to know this, but...)

What I am particularly interested in is anyone with multiple monitor setup. I have added code to handle this, but I have not been able to test it. So I am very interested in this.

Also, I have not tested it in Windows 2000, Windows ME or Windows 98. I have not added any code to handle passwords in Windows 98. In Windows XP password is handled by the system. So should Windows 2000. Not sure about Windows ME.

Requires .NET Framework 2

I'm wondering wether it's agood idea to only alow the use to select a font of a fixed size. If it's not it could cause some unpredictable drawing of the numbers. All though it seem to work OK with most non fixed size fonts. I'm considering leaving the option open for the user. What do you think?

Runs VERY very fast, might need an option to slow it down? Although it has a neglible effect on CPU. Transparency is a cool *thumbs up* .

x2 4400
2G DDR400
Rad X700 (Cat 6.2 drivers)
XP Home

Have to agree with MaxIreland, it runs very very fast, and a way to slow it down would be nice. Changed the font to Arabolical and it looks very cool especially with the transparency.

The .NET framework wont run on Win98..will it?

If thats required to run the saver then it wont work on at least that OS..

The download page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en lists the following OS: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition; Windows ME; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP Service Pack 2

YuP, I already checked into it.. My win98 machines are just too ancient I think to even attempt it.. The fastest processor I have in one is a P111 450 with 200mb of RAM and they go downhill from there..

OK... Just tried other OSs-
Win2000 works ok,
Windows ME does work for me but it seems to 'shudder' every minute or so. Its not the hardware coz my 2nd box dual boots 2000/ME so they're under the same setup-
Athlon 1400
512 DDR
GeForce 2**

I've no intact copies of Win98 left so I can't try that one out for you. At a guess 3.1 just isn't gonna happen!!

haha! No, no 3.1. But that one I would have been able to test my self if I was back home in Norway. Got an old 486, 50Mhz, 8MB Ram laptop with Windows 3.1. It's pretty good. I really like that machine. Still going strong. Think my brothers girlfriend actually use it from time to time to write documents.

When you say 'shudder', what do you mean? The screensaver flicker and it starts to redraw again?
I'm not actually that bothered about the Win9x versions since they are so old now. But I was just curious if it would even run. Thanks for testing though.

I got an request for an option to have no colums. I made a build that did that, but... do you really want that? Have a look at the screenshot: http://www.thomthom.net/xfiles/matrixNoColums.png
I felt it got too messy, but...

Been quite awhile since I saw the original movie, (didnt see the sequels, guess im not a *true fan, LoL) were there collums in the movie version?

I guess what I am asking is which would be more true to form?

thomassen, It would be nice to have an option for that in the Settings for people who like it like that.

D'Zero: it's not an Matrix emulation. it's inspired by it. If you want one closer to the green screen in The Matrix there is an screensaver availible at the official Matrix site. This one is different because I didn't want to reinvent the wheel.

Meowy: At the moment there was only one request. That's why I'm wondering if there really is any need for it.

At the moment now I'm implementing a speed setting. But it wasn't as straith forward as I thought. Need to tweak it right so it doesn't look odd.

Ok. I buildt the final 1.2 build now. Awaiting moderation so it should be up soon.

Yep, when I said that it "shuddered" under WinME it does look like its struggling to re-draw every few seconds. That could be because of another process stealing rescourses and I'm not savvy enough to hunt it down.

Lookin forward to the 1.2 release.

Errh. I meant to say 1.1. there is no 1.2. ooops!

Anyways, it's up now. However. I checked the zip file and for some reason the readme file and font file I included was gone. Not sure what happend there.

Thank you very much to all of you that helped and provided feedback.

There is something odd going on. The download only gave the old version. I reuploaded it. So there's a little more wait.

Right'o! It's up and working now!

Does the speed setting make much difference? That one was a bit akward to implement.

Speed setting works well on my main x2 4400 rig, I'm impressed!
Still runs really well on Win2000, and I figured out that I have a problem with my .NET framework install on WinME which might explain why it 'stuttered'.
