How to make a great game less great

The trouble with metaverse and me

First, I loved GAL CIV 1 and am looking forward eagerly to GAL CIV 2. I spent many, many pleasurable hours with the first. I figure it cost me less than a penny an hour when comparing the cost of the game with the hours I played it (I didn't really keep record).

But I did eventually stop playing it. I found that trying to get my score higher on metaverse (I got up to 32nd place) involved employing less than fun strategy during play, such as "rerolling" galaxy set ups and employing in-game strategies that would bring the game to a quicker ending (if it didn't work, then reroll and start again as opposed to go ahead and try to win at a slower, but more fun, pace.

It was really my fault. No one forced me at gun point to play that way. And it was a thrill to post my win on metaverse, but game play itself suffered. It was a lot more fun before I started trying to improve my metaverse standing. I am just going to enjoy GAL 2 for the gameplay itself. I'll still post to metaverse, but I won't be a competitor there this time. GAL CIV 2 looks too good not to just sit back and enjoy it.

True. While the Metaverse was nifty, I didn't really get married to it either. In fact, I LOVED GalCiv I, but it seems that over 50% of my games I never finished. Still, it is the game that's on my laptop and goes with me on all business or pleasure travel. It's also the oldest of the games sitting on my desk at home (still in use), by far. I've never had an unpleasant experience with it.

And... I'm about to explode with anticipation of the arrival of my GalCiv II package in the mail! I've already told my staff I'll be, er, taking a day or two off in early March. Lol.

However, I don't think that the Metaverse is a bad thing at all. It's just not for you or me. We will play our way, at our pace and love it without the Metaverse. Others with a stronger competitive gene will enjoy fighting for rankings on the Metaverse.

May your box arrive before mine!

*Forces jwquinn at gun point to swerve onto the shoulder in order to squash the turtle.*

And shame on Doctor J, a day or two tsk tsk - It will take a least a week

As long as the galaxy bows to our will in the end who cares where we place on Metaverse

Maybe I should try to get back into the top 100 before GalCiv2 comes out. I'm at 107 right now... And it's been a few months since my last game.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the new version.

As reply to original post I see your point clearly.

I kinda ruined Civ4 experience for myself . I read all the guides I could find and pretty soon I was kicking AI around easily. As this was not enought our Multiplayer games became really brutal as everybody perfected their gaming skills.

I admit Civ4 was a better game for me before I learned all the trick to win AI. Hopefully this doesn´t happen with GalCiv2

Well, as I said, I will no doubt use metaverse. I am just not going to sacrifice gameplay for a higher score. GALCIV 1 was probably one of my favorite games of all time (and I have been around longer than I care to admit - think back to the original "Reach For The Stars" on the old Commodore 64) . GALCIV 2 looks to be way better than GALCIV 1 in so many ways. ... and better than every other 4x space game ever. Only a Dregin would not be satisfied wit that.

Hey, if metaverse is improved, then that is just more icing on the galactic cake that already has plenty of icing on it.

And now I played a game and I'm at 144. The Metaverse is funky like that.
