State of the Beta - what needs fixing?

State of the Beta - what needs fixing?

Everyone has had time to experiment with the beta, so in the interest of doing an informal poll of the testers, here's a quick query for you.

Let's see what's on your mind, all in one place. I'll bump this up weekly so we can see how the beta improves and issues (hopefully!) drop off peoples lists.

What are your three least favorite aspects of the beta.

Only three - keep it to the stuff that's driving you nuts, big or small.

If you have an appropriate forum link to discuss or illuminate your problems, post em with your list.

Mine:

1) UI. Tons of stuff about it that drives me crazy, a lot of them the same issues from WoM.

2) Performance. 3d performance is increasingly sluggish once I'm past the early game.

3) City development. Simply not interesting. https://forums.elementalgame.com/415879

1) I will go with the UI. I know technical-oriented devs tend to underestimate this aspect (look at Dwarf Fortress - deepest game ever, but the UI is a mess! Every screen controls and behaves differently). Consistency, ergonomy, ease of use - this must improve (I have a separate thread on this)

2) Difficult choices with lasting effect. All drama and tragedy is based on hard choices - will you save your wife, or the kingdom? Will you support the nobles, and turn the burgers against you, or vice versa? Will you accept state religion and opress the minorities, or refuse to do so and face the wrath of the church? FE does not have this

3) Sad to say, but FE needs to be more different than EWOM, which it is currently not. That is a disappointment for me, because I thought Brad understood that the disproportion of his satisfaction with the game, and the poor reception by critics and general public is because the game has critical flaws in the core mechanics. I thought, good, they are hiring Derek to design them a new gameplay core from scratch, and they will use the existing assets like graphics, sounds, and the mythology. But no, it seems that Brad's opinion is - the core game is fine, it just lacks some bells and whistles, so let's hire Derek to design more quests, more lore and more factions and we will be good to go.

It's true that I was playing the game only a few hours yesterday, but these are my impressions. Please understand also that these are my personal, subjective opinions and they represent only my self. Maybe I did not understand something, maybe there is a silent, very happy majority who is completely happy with the game. All is good then. Or maybe there isn't...

1) The AI is not finished. Like Brad said it needs a lot of work and we'll only see specific strategies in beta 2.

2) The city improvements are too minor. All options are viable but hardly have any big impact. Maintenance should be higher.

3) Copied from Seanw3: There are no mutually exclusive choices. I can do everything in the game in one playthrough. I can specialize in every class as a hero. I can get every spell. I can get 95% of the buildings. Regulars and Heroes should be balanced, but I should not be able to make the best of both in one game. Make me choose a specialty. The only thing that really makes me specialize is when I cannot find enough heroes to get every magic type to level 5.

1) Citybuilding. There are plenty of threads about this so I won't say more.

2) More soul into the UI. I want to FEEL good when I find epic loot, finish a quest, kill a wildland boss, finish a building. Currently I don't feel anything when doing these. Champion and city level up gives me some joy, so they are alright (but they too could do with a bit more fanfare).

I have forgiven many pretty poor games just because it felt so cool to get some special loot or whatever in them. It is MUCH MUCH more important that the game makes me FEEL good than for any strategic depth. Both are important, but the presentation is a gamebreaker (or maker).

3) More actual decisions to make. Now it's just straightforward get big and conquer everything with very easy decision all around.

1. Tactical battles still need work.  I would like to see more interaction with the actual battle field (line of site, tile bonus', etc).  I would also like to place my army rather than have it show up like a mob at the beginning of a battle

2. AI but that has already been discussed and has not been completed so not a big deal yet

3. I would like to see more "moral" questions or choicees with quests.  If I take on a quest or decline, I would like that to have some positive or negative impact on my characters reputation and perhaps impact how other factions deal with me.  am i good, evil, etc based on my choices.

1) cities not really funny to develop and too few strategy involved

2) research too long for so few advantages it gives and lacking a bit of flavor

3) troops are too much sided and also require a lot of research and time and stuff , really would love more army involvement
