Do you play with the grid turned off?

Hey, I am a video game developer and I wanted to ask fans of TBS games a question.

When you are playing a grid based strategy game... do you ever play with the grid turned off? I know that many games have this feature, some do not... I personally always play with the grid enabled...

Anyways depending on your feedback I can decide whether its worth putting in an option to turn off the grid in my game.

Thanks!

I usually play with the grid off but I find myself turning it on more often in Civ 5 when the map gets crowded during a battle. Once I'm used to hexes I probably wont use it much. Don't really need it but it helps sometimes.

Depends on the game. When in TC I use it more often than on the strategy map if possible to set them separately.

Thanks for the input so far, yeah I am mostly concerned with tactical combat. I know games like Civ 5 use the same grid for tactical combat and regular gameplay so its kind of a hybrid.

I play with it on.

Off in strategic but definetely on in tactical. When at strategic map I want to 'feel' the world and the grid would spoil that experience.

At tactical the much important is where are mine and enemy units, what is the range of move and spells/range attack and overall what is happening and without grid that would be hard.

The game is prettier without but especially on the 3D map there is no possible way to tell which squares are passable and which are not... except for the grid.

As a result I would wish for the grid to brightly glow so you could actually play on the 3D map.

I usually play with the grid disabled just for looks!

I would like to be able to keep it off, but the  map must make very clear where the tiles are. I would like a game where the grid is off but by passing the cursor on the map I can see the hex I point to (please do hexes,  don't do tiles!!!)

Hexes are still tiles, they're just not square tiles.

It depends; I generally toggle based on need and situation. It also depends on the clarity of the visuals - if it's hard to determine spacing and such, grid on tends to be the default.

you should have a grid opacity slider instead of an on/off switch!  :)

The AI "sees" the chessboard, so I like to see it too :P

For me it depends on the game. I especially like it if a game has a key bound to the grid. Then you can play with the grid off, but switch it on to count an important movement with a simple keypress. Then re-enable it.

Of course the most important thing about the important movement is being able to click accurately on the hex/square/area that you're moving to. I'm looking at you, Elemental tactical combat.

I like to play with the Grid on, I would think an on/off option would be pretty much mandatory these days.

I like to play with Grid off, but on the beginning when it is a new game, i like to have the grid on, just for learning the game.

Grid on or off?  Depends on the game, how clear the 'squares' are with it off, and what i ma doing at the time.  I prefer to play with grid off, as it look more 'natural' (whatever that is), more immersive.  However, if i have something that requires exact precision to do (really important move, build etc, I temporally turn the grid on, do it, and then turn the grid back off.
