1. Besides the hiring cost, is there any drawback to hiring every champion I see? There seems to be waaaaaay too many of them.
2. If I win a battle with 2 champions, is the experience split between them or do they each get full experience as though they had won on their own?

1. Well, some bonuses are better than others so I see little point in collecting most of them. Like the ones with +1 to whatever are nice early but once your empire is cranking 1 of anything is pretty sad. The ones that give % bonus scale better.
2. No clue but everything seems to level quickly enough and there's no lack of stuff to fight to gain xp.
No draw back other than cost. However, whether or not they're worthwhile to your situation will vary; someone with poor stats may not be suitable for someone trying to take over the world.
I believe everyone earns their own XP. It takes two fights to get from level 1 to 2 (and so on) and that seems consistent whether or not I've stacked champs.
