The iPad Thread

Well, I got mine (32GB wifi)... I know IslandDog got one as well.

This thing is awesome. I spent pretty much every waking minute with it since I got it on Saturday, and now I find my iPhone to be a pain to use. But it's more than just a bigger iPod Touch. The iPad-designed apps are pretty amazing. Yes, there have been tablets before, but the iPad finally delivers on the "new paradigm." It's not a PC; Apple isn't trying to cram a desktop OS into it. But for a mobile consumption device, it's amazing.

What's the frigging point of the device? What does it do?

That's a rather philosophical question. What's the point of any device?

It's a fantastic device for reading, whether books, web pages, books, newspapers, and magazines.

It's a fantastic device for on-the-go. I own a MBP, and I love it, but having to lug it everywhere is a bit of a pain. Need a big laptop bag; usually bring the charger with me. Now I've got a device that does pretty much everything I need, and it slim and fits in a tiny satchel.

The capabilities only grow as more iPad-centric apps come out.

According to the news report, last night, they've sold over 300,000.
If that's true, they've basically made between $150 - $255 million, over night.
That's massive. I want one. :)

At some point I think we will need to ask ourselves...  Not if we can built it, but rather should we...

I think it's just a toy myself. If it's just for reading and stuff like that,.... I do not see the point.

I do not want one

I want one... but I'll wait for the next version to come out down the road. Hopefully the price goes down too.

But I will get hands on one this weekend. Few of my friends did pick some up so I see whats the fuss is all about.

The device is an easy to carry lite version of a normal tablet.  It's like any of the older pc tablets, only it's easy to use, and from what I've seen, doesn't have hand writing recognition.

It doesn't have nearly the features of a netbook or another tablet, that's also it's power too, as it's easy to turn on and use.  For quick internet use on the road or at home, it beats a netbook ten fold.  Although considering netbooks have more use, I can't totally agree with Island Dog on it killing them.

As with any device or gadget there will be folks that find a use for the iPad.

Myself, I don't find much use for a cell phone that does more than receive or make phone calls.

That's just me and it's not a real reflection on the product or market place.  :sun:

I'm going to wait for the next release of the iPad ... When they add a mic, cam, usb and

micro-sd slot ... I'll get one. I'm also, waiting on the HP Slate too .. I figure the slate will have

Win7 and I will be able to access servers and do other IT stuff with the HP Slate. I'll find out

when its released.

I have a mobile phone [cell] that....wait for it....makes/receives phone calls.

At times it's an alarm clock....;)

I don't have an iPhone as it has too much bullshit I'd never use.

I am yet to see a use for an iPad.

The only 'real' use I ever had for a laptop was when I was travelling OS....so maybe next time I'd get a newer/faster/smaller/lighter one.

Not quite true....I DO see one use for an iPad.....its manufacture/sale just made Apple a little richer.

Bully for them....;)

I'll throw this out there for everyone to bash to death ...

I got an iPad on launch day and I absolutely love it.  I'll never use my netbook again.  It is ten times more portable, faster, and just all around more usable for me.  So far, it can do everything my netbook ever did, for a much longer period of time.  So I for one am very very pleased.

P.S. The iPad does have a microphone I believe.

There is an explicit purpose for the iPad.  My wife thought the MacBook was pretty.  $1,000.  Didn't work for certain streams she wanted...netbook $500.  Dropped and broke the netbook...$500.  The iPad is pretty and for chirssakes even Morning Joe has one...$500.  See what I mean....

You can't even run flash on those iPads. Useless.

Well the thing is easy to use, quick to turn on, and good for daily use.  In a few months, the same people above will complain about flash (Unless they jailbreak it, which btw guys, just came out from the guy who jailbroke the iphone..................................).

Seriously though, the hype is overdone.  It's reminds me of Halo 3 hype.  Good game yes, but pales in comparison to pc fps games.

Of course pc fps games require you to know about pcs...

As shocking as it may sound, I'm waiting for the 3g ipad to come out to get one.  Unlike you fools, I'm gonna carry around both an ipad and a netbook.  The ipad will probably be used far more often, but the netbook will be useful for actually having an os and doing actual stuff with it....

Oh please.  Not having Flash does not affect the experience at all and certainly does not render them useless.

So your netbook wouldn't multitask either.......I like the concept smaller/lighter more than a kindle but less than a notebook, but I'll wait until there's one out that has a bit more to it........

How tough is the screen? I know that iPhone screens are dainty things that break in a stiff breeze......this one's sooooo much more exposed.

iToo.  Sometimes I use it to tell time also.  For the most part, I don't even use it that much for phone calls.  The only reason I have it is because my job requires me to be at the ready 24/7.  They pay for it.  iPad, iPhone, iWhatever.  I do have have an iPod though and I use the hell out of that.

It does if you play flash games like I do.

I'm sorry, but this device could be the best thing ever made and I will never buy one for one simple reason: no user replaceable battery.  Battery dies (and it eventually will) you have to send your iPad back to Apple at your cost and pay a $99 fee for a new one, and they can't guarantee that your data and settings won't be lost!  I learned my lesson on non-user replaceable batteries and won't consider any device that doesn't allow you to replace it yourself.

Add to that no flash (there are just a "few" flash games out there, as kona0197 mentioned), App Store lock in and I'm done.

Don't get me wrong, I can see a use for these for some people, and if you like it great.  Its just not for me.
