GUI Olympics 2004 - It's Official!

An excerpt from the January WinCustomize newsletter:

In March WinCustomize plans to help sponsor the GUI Olympics 2004. Two years ago the GUI Olympics was an inter-website skinning contest. The subject-matter was WindowBlinds 3. A lot has happened since then and skinning has grown even more popular.
You can see the skins (visual styles) from the last GUI Olympics here. Some of the best, most original skins of all time were made during that period. The GUI Olympics already has 2 big sponsors lined up and is hoping to get even more. Even at this early stage we've got $10,000 in cash and prizes committed to it. The categories will be WindowBlinds, Icon packages, and one of the popular media players. The categories will range from most creative, most practical, minimalist, power user, and so forth. Stay tuned for more news, hopefully by the next WinCustomize Magazine we'll have more details.

This is just GREAT! I can't wait to see it start! What a competition it's gonna be! The very best of luck to all the skinners!

It will be run quite differently this time around. The community has changed radically in the last couple of years. There's been a lot of consolidation.

I hope there is a "best overall" category.

Last time there were many excellent skins targeted at a specific category, but very few I would actually ever use.

March... I think I will just have to finish any running jobs and start working on a killer theme

What kind of time limit are we talking about on the skins? Would that mean they are due in March? Strictly speaking, a solo skinner would have to start now to do anything substantial on WMP or Winamp, or really even Windowblinds. I hope the time limit reflects the complexity of apps now.

Wish desktop X was one of the items, but I guess it would be difficult considering the use of other people's objects and such.

What I am asking is if the contest is set for March, will the skins be *due* in March, or will that be when the particulars are announced. For a really good skin, it could take a solo skinner a month or more to complete one.

As for DesktopX, I don't think you could fairly grade it when people can use other people's objects. Most of the standard functionality people look for are things like the weather object, etc., and those normally are shared around the community.

I had to wipe the dust off this thread, because I was wondering about a few things.
First-I'm going to get a little flak on this one, but we already know who the winners are already. Some of the people here get paid to make skins, so they will have the advantage. Now we just have to see who comes in 2nd, 3rd, etc... (Example) It's like Micheal Jordan playing Joe, Fred and Bubba in a free throw competition. We know who will win, just have to see who the next one in line will be.
Second-I'm a little curious what the Big Dogs (you know who you are) will do. Will they submit skins to try to get a little money or will they hang on to something because they can sell it to everyone and make even more money.
It might be a tough choice.
I don't think as myself being a big dog, yet. I'm a 3 year old pup growing fast.

You sure are.

I'd rethink that.....may preclude you from entering....

My apologies, Jafo. My intentions were not to offend anyone. There are some fantastic skinners out there and they're already winners in my book.

Ross.....as yet I have no idea of details etc...but I'm guessing that some of these skinners that come to mind may be excluded anyway.....dunno who or where the Judging Panel will be sourced...

The whole process will not be as per the first Olympics....that's a 'given'....

Paul, as per usual, I stick my foot in my mouth. Sometimes, curiousity kills the cat, sometimes, the cat eats you. Things are better left unsaid. Again, my apoligies. I hope a don't lose friends and the people I respect over something I said.
To all the people who enter, good luck.

I don't know if I'm more excited about entering or seeing the fantastic skins from everyone else.
