CPU

I do not want to sound like a commercial for a product or anything but I need to share with everyone my new found speed... I found a way to upgrade my aging P2 450 (old BX440 intel board) ... now running at 1.4 ghz! Weeeeeeeeee... sandra bench mark tests were as follows.
P2 450
Dhrystone ALU 1170 mips
Whetstone FPU 587 MFLOPS

new Tualatin 1400 mhz (celeron)
Dhrystone ALU 3832 mips
Whetstone FPU 1867 MFLOPS

this performance does indeed pour over into real world use... games I never could run b4 now fly...

...Um... Static? Are you the guy who was expecting to have a new baby in the family any time now?
Yes that was I... still waiting... just past 37 weeks... she still is having periodic Braxten hicks... but no baby yet.

Sounds like your life is on a roll! Good to hear. Keep us updated about the baby, OK? How is your new house?

I am running a P3 450 on a Tabor MP440BX, would it work on mine?

Everyone with a intel (crap) chip should consider switching over to a AMD chip. Better benchmarks.

Sorry Kona0197, but out of necessity, I taught myself how to build this only computer from the scraps of three others that I was able to procure from throwaways.

Until I can easily afford to buy a new one, this one will have to suffice. I take great pride in being able to salvage junk piles and give them new life.

For some of us, we cannot afford the luxury of of choice.

I'm with you jake I've done the very same... the only money I really spent on it was on the Proc... it was about $170 us... but I paid $250 canadian.
I don't know if it will work on yours or not. There is a utility they have that you can run it. Email them the results and they will email you back with any possible upgrade suggestions.
post your email. I'll send you the link.

Goodmorphing... so far so good... thanks for asking.

@ jake11

I only spent a total of $290 on this system:

AMD Athlon XP 2200 @1.9 ghz
K7S5A Mainboard with SIS 745 Chipset
128 DDR 2100 Memory
SIS 64 MEG 8x AGP Video Card
40 Gig HD
DVD drive
Black Case with See thru side

All these parts are brand new, in the box. I never use used stuff.

kona0197 I've noticed that you seem to hate anything that is successful... like MS and Intel... so tell me how you gonna get OS X running on your AMD? Or is the power PC chip ok with you... IBM had a hand in creating that chip... they are pretty successful as well...

I don't hate everything successful. that not true. I just don't like Intel because everyone knows that AMD chips run cooler, outperform Intel chips, and cost less. As far as Microsoft, why should I pay $299 dollars for a OS that the bugs are still being worked out of? I am using a microsoft product right now. It's called Windows ME. Far less complicated and takes up way less space. As far as OS X, I'm gonna sell this computer and buy a apple. Since a apple is unix based, they hardly ever crash.
I read that you plan on buying an apple... but as they say don't put all your apples in one basket... hehe... anyway you should do some more research on apples version of unix ... you might find some eye opening er... shall we say bugs! They are going thru growing pains of their own.

I just don't think that what is suitable for one is suitable for all... different uses and different circumstances will determine what is "best"
There is no way I can get an AMD that will run faster then the Tualatin 1.4 on my BX board without any mods... so for me Intel is #1 at the moment

usually mainboard don't run both AMD and intel, being that the two chips are different sizes and voltages. But you could go to outpost.com and check out the deals they have there. For $100 bucks you can get a good mainboard and a AMD 2400 chip. And if you put a AMD system of the SAME speed and configuration next to your system, SiSandra would confirm that the AMD system blows Intel out of the water.
And just for something to think about check this out:
I ran SiSandra on my chip and came up with this:
AMD Athlon Xp 2200+ 1.8GHz
Dhrystone ALU 5007
Whetstone FPU 2505
As compared to a Pentium 4 2.6 GHZ:
Dhrystone ALU 4904
Whetstone FPU:
1385
So as we see, a AMD Athlon XP running at 1.8 Ghz slaps the crap and gives a weggie to a P4 running over at 2 GHz.

I don't know that, that would be possible... my system uses a 100 mhz FSB. This chip uses a 14x multiplier and a special voltage regulator built onto the slot 1 converter by powerleap which control the exact output. ( no AMD in the 1.4 ghz realm runs on 100 mhz so the comparison could not be made)
This is why a machine that was meant to run nothing faster then a P2 500 can push 1.4 ghz. of coarse there are obvious bottle necks in the 100 mhz sdram and the hard drive speed but I firmly believe I have succeeded in allowing myself to get a couple more years from this beast. And with a baby on the way thats a really good thing.. I need money for other things.

Actually you caught my intrest. How would I make my friends p2 450 system run that fast? And I think even the Durons run at 133 so your right. But you have to admit AMD is cool. And cheaper. How soon until your a dad?
anytime now... we both want it out... hehe.
its definitely a possibility what type of mother board is he running?
I hate to post an ad but this is the url http://www.powerleap.com for US or http://www.powerleap.ca for canada. on the left hand side of the page you will see a large button that says find an upgrade it is a test that you can run in your browser then send the info to them... they will email back with a possible upgrade. For me it was literally plug and play on my BX.

I should send them my resume... sorry bout the addy ppl.

Thanks. Any thoughts about what I said about upgrading? The board I have can use SDRAM and DDR RAM without changing anything.
I certainly would entertain the idea... if circumstances were different. I've alway held a firm belief that pound per pound AMD can out perform Intel... so if the option were open I'd definitely upgrade my board and chip but I'll wait a couple of years now... or slowly build my next system chip by chip over the next few years...

I purposely switched from AMD to a P4. When not in use my pc processes Seti work units. My AMD 1.4Ghz averaged 7h 30m per work unit, my P4 2.66Ghz averages 2h 50m. There is currently no AMD processor which can get close to that time.

Benchmarks only tell half the story. How the CPU performs in real life is more important. For things requiring calculations, such as Seti or spreadsheets, then the P4 will be the choice. For games, then the AMD will be the choice.

I play a lot of system bashing games but decided to opt for the P4 anyway. The reason being with my Ti4200 I get over 11000 using 3DMark2001 without any overclocking which is more than adequate for any new game. Looking at this month's PC Extreme magazine I see the top benchmark for a Ti4200/AMD is 10569 with a XP 2000+. It is possible to overclock and get up to 16000 with an AMD/Ti4200, but is hardly worth it. Running UT2003 at 1024x768 with all the extras switched on I have no difficulty getting a 90fps average.

Overall for a satisfactory games performance and the required speed I need for Seti, the P4 was the right choice for me.
