Could someone please help me with a Win2K SP3 technical problem?

First off, sorry about how long this is

If someone could take a stab at this I would really, really appreciate it.

I installed the Catalyst 2.4 drivers. Didn't like them, so uninstalled and reinstalled the 2.3 drivers. The 2.4 set left some stuff behind (ATI Smart service, which I have disabled.) Since then, I've been getting the following errors. I have tried everything I know to fix them, but I'm not an expert at this by any means. I have no idea what the "True Vector Engine" is, but it sounds video related.

After my initial boot-up, my computer seems to finish loading everything (all icons are in the systray, all programs load up ok) and then it re-boots. I found the following information. I don't know how to open the dump file to look at it and I probably wouldn't know what it means anyway I can e-mail it to you if you need it.

I also found the following errors and have no idea if they are related or not.

True Vector Engine is used for drawing some web graphics. When your pc tries to draw, it will look for TVE which would have been installed with the 2.4 drivers, because you've gone back to 2.3, it can't find what it's looking for and reboots. All the re-boot does is stop you seeing a blue screen message (...progress).

As for a fix...aaah! First thing to try is removing the device using device manager - best done in safe mode if Win2K will allow. Your pc will try to re-intall the drivers following re-boot. A few more ways ( which you probably won't like!): one is to re-install the 2.4 drivers, the other is a restore from backup or clean install...better save that one till you've exhausted every other option I haven't thought of

Bad install/uninstall is one of the most frustrating problems you can have. Your pc can go from being fine to a complete wreck in seconds! Hope the cure is simple.

Just had a brief look at the Microsoft Knowledge Base but couldn't see anything similar to this. They may be something there, so it's worth a further dig through.

Thanks Fuzzy...

I looked everywhere for something called True Vector Engine in the device manager and no luck.

What I might try is uninstalling all the ATI video components then use a registry cleaner (thanks for the recommendation on the newsgroups!) to get rid of all the un-neccesary crap, then reinstall the 2.3 drivers.

Fuzzy, where are you in the U.K.? I'm just interested as a fellow Brit. Don't worry, I don't want to come round for tea or anything................unless you have those "Boasters" cookies with the big lumps of chocolate on them!

I found a reference to True Vector as being part of Zone Alarm (??????) Why would this just start happening now? I've had Zone Alarm running for months.

would uninstalling the video card and all related drivers clear it, and then reinstall from disk? or is that unrelated?

could someone with Win2K and the Catalyst 2.5 or 2.4 driver set look in their registry at hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\eventlog\ATI Smart\Enum and tell me what their value is please?

tinkergaloot: Is SmartGart turning on your AGP port or setting it to "off" ?

Actually, could you tell me what the executable path is for the ATI Smart service? Do you know what I'm talking about?

werewolf-
SmartGart was causing me all sorts of problems. Yes, it was switching AGP off, despite it being enabled in BIOS. And it won't enable FastWrite either. I checked in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Settings, and found that the ATI Smart entry had it's start up option set to manual. I changed it to automatic, rebooted and everything is fine with AGP, but still no luck with FastWrite.
Check C:/Program Files/ATI Technologies/ATI Control Panel for the SmartGart executable, clicking on it should bring up a dialog box with a couple of PCI/AGP read/write settings that may help you solve your problems.

I've spent quite a bit of time looking into this but info is sparse. The solution does appear to be removing Zone Alarm completely rather than just True Vector Engine alone. Then a re-install should have everything pointing in the right direction.
I also read Zone Alarm can have conflicts with Quick Time and some IE Java scripts. That may be worth investigation too.

P.S. BoXXi - I'm in Sheffield (nothing with chocolate in lasts long enough to share ).

Thanks to Tinkergaloot, Kinrik, SlowNeasy and Fuzzy. You won't believe how I fixed these two problems.

The ATI installer for the Catalyst 2.5 drivers (and presumably the 2.4 drivers) is not working correctly. I went into the device manager and did a manual update on the drivers, choosing "Have Disk" option, pointed it to where the installer unpacked the drivers and chose them. I then went into services and disabled the ATI Smart service. Rebooted. Fixed. Even the Display Properties SMARTGart tab is showing correctly.

Now, don't ask me why, but this also seems to have fixed the problem I was having with the True Vector engine as I am now booting up error and warning free. Go figure. Maybe this will help someone else. Sheesh.

Thanks again folks for your help...I really, really appreciate it.

Glad you got it sorted Mr. Wolf! The guys here are great when you have a problem, just look at all the help I got with my problem. Much better than those help desks!

Glad everything is working OK, werewolf - touch wood... Experience has taught me (very quickly) that the Catalyst drivers can be very temperamental beasts...

Thanks folks. It is so strange that video drivers can cause such a variety of, seemingly, unconnected problems. I wrote back to ATI support and let them know the problem and how I fixed it. They wrote back and said they were glad everything is working out for me. They didn't say anything about getting it fixed. While I was researching the problem, I noticed there were quite a few people having problems with the installer. Oh well, live and learn.

So, when are the 2.6 drivers coming out
