Love the game always have, but how many more possibilities could there have been if you where able to choose which way to go based on your current situation or map placement?
Not to mention how much more strategic it would have made the game, anytime you reduce choices you reduce strategy.
Do I go dual Starbases or TAR? 
This was how the dev's wanted to implement it at first, but they decided after a lot of playtesting that they would go with the way it is now... Don't ask me why, I think it would have been much cooler if they implemented it like this.
The code is actually still in the game that powered this mechanic, so if someone wanted too they could make a mod where you switch sub factions in game, or any other sort of mechanic where you have to make a choice between one tech and other for the rest of the game.
That is true, but the devs could have simply made a new faction research tree. And modders can make existing ones bigger so it works out.
They could of had a whole new branch of techs " political affiliation".
I still don't understand why they ended up not doing on the fly, because it doesn't seem very complicated to me. It doesn't seem like its a successor to Diplomacy at the moment, but since Steam got involved and the fact I really need a new computer, I haven't even tried it.
people thought it too hard, the Ai threw a fit, and in dev.exe if you give all research that might screw things up. 7 Deadly Sins is going to do everything possible to make at least the Empire use this so players go neutral, Jedi or Sith.
