Campaign advice?

Hi

I'm playing Elemental for the first time, i have been doing the campaign.

So far i have just been taking it easy wandering around with a small party and various AI reinforcements. I have 3 cities and i am not really building all that much.... so far i have only build 4 individual units, 2 groups of 4 archers, 1 group of 8 soldiers, 3 merchants and that's it.

What i really want to know is this.... I keep wondering if i am going to be overrun at some point because i have been so lazy in building up my forces? Or am i safe to just keep trotting around following campaign goals as i have been so far?

Spoiler (highlight to read):

You don't even need to build any units.  Relias and Janusk and whatever else is given to you will be more than enough to defeat whatever is thrown at you.

Your joking! There are little magic dudes that are quite hard to hit, just one lone dude wiped out all my own archers, the free archers plus my hero's and relius! all because my men kept on missing, missmissmissmissmissmissmissmissmissmissmissmissmiss X 5 = game over! At some point you do actually need to 'hit' the enemy in order to kill them. Next time i will be taking probably an extra 4 squads of x4 archers to stop any extra lucky ones.
