Jefferson strategy

Hey folks.  I've been enjoying the game a lot so far.  Of course like a lot of you out there, my goal is to unlock all the characters in campaign mode.  I started off unlocking the democrats.  Carter and Clinton were pretty easy with my big spending strategy.  LBJ and Wilson gave me more a run for my money.  Jefferson is where I hit a bump in the road.  If the campaign were only a couple weeks longer I think I can overtake him.  However, I don't have that luxury.

My strategy has been spending the first 3/4 of the campaign building lots of income with HQ's and fund raising.  I also try and get some endorsements for early to mid game awareness.  Hence why I picked George Bush to use since he seemed like the best stats unlocked Rep for this.  The last part of the race is a real ad storm from me.  Throw in some strategically placed operatives and I was sitting pretty come week 41.  Last time around with Jefferson, I got a little greedy.  I was trying to take Pennsylvania, when there were some easier low hanging fruit in the last leg of the race when I make a big comeback in the polls.  I think I should have myself a strategy of states I will campaign in and only stay in those states.  It seems a little foolishly defensive, but Jefferson is a real beast.  You will be behind in the polls a lot with this guy.

Anyway, this is the map I came up with to work on.  Ohio is going to be hard.  Virginia will be tough at first since he has an initial awareness bonus, but that should be negated late in the race.  Colorado and Missouri have a tendency to be targeted by the democratic candidate I notice, so that could be a problem.  As you can see I leave little wiggle room but I don't get too aggressive and go for unrealistic states:

If its too hard still to beat him I can always try and see how far I can get with Wilson.  Maybe unlock Reagan (I'm guessing Lincoln is just as hard as Jefferson) and see if they'd have a better go around with our 3rd president.  Does my strategy sound all right?  Anyone have any suggestions for going after this tough cookie?

I've only so far done Jefferson with Reagan and it was a cakewalk, so yes, unlocking Reagan would probably sufice. Reagan is (easily) competative in California, making any Dem work for it and thus leaving room in the midwest/oregon for expansion.

If you want to try again with W instead of going for Pen you might want to hit Michigan hard (depending on Jeffersons actions there). Extra clout will also help. Alot. You'll be behind early in states you want to win for sure (Ohio/Carolina's/Virginia) but you'll be able to ignore some other states completely (more or less all 3-5 EV states, perhaps Arkansas, some of Appalachia if lucky). Good luck. :)

Edit: actually, Wisconsin & Iowa would be a safer bet then Michigan. Thought the numbers for Michigan were a bit better for Rep. ;)

I couldn't believe what happened my next time around. I might have just had bad luck the first go arounds with Jefferson. This time around I was of course behind 3/4 into the race by around 6 points nationally. Nothing to get excited over. Once I began putting TV ads in my states that were wobbly either way I began to notice some of his states were being put into play, week by week some states I wasn't expecting. Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin were all getting into that could go either way zone with my TV ads in my own states. Well I started scooping them up as they came along one by one. I didn't even care that WV was solidly blue anymore. On week 41 it was an overwhelming lead because my last two ads I put out there sent Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire into my camp. It was a blowout victory. Bring on JFK! :D

JFK was a bit tougher than Jefferson for sure. Boy he just never runs out of stuff to do during his turn. But I stayed with my same strategy and was a late come from behind victory. At my worst point I was 14 points behind in the national polls, but my late TV ads were just too much for his dozens of newspaper ads. Also I made sure to boost my clout earlier like you suggested Kahn so I was able to get all the cheap endorsements for me, but JFK was just as fast getting his own. At least he didn't get any of mine.

Well now I have to go unlock some Republicans! Also can't wait to download some new candidates when Stardock releases some more. Arnold? FDR? :D
