Looking for a Desktop Tool of sorts, please read.

Hi there.

Hope I posted in the right forum! So much to choose from...

Well I basicly just got one short question. I quite love most of the things I can see here and I will download one of the bootscreens to my new comp definetly. So a big congratz to everyone who have worked on all these skins of all sorts.

But one thing puzzles me. This seems to be the biggest site for StartMenu Themes/Desktop Tools. But there's nowhere I can find something like this .

That is a desktop workstation that doesn't change the actual Start Menu design but instead adds things to the desktop. Like Icons, a clock...what ever.

So does anyone of you people here know something like this here somewhere that I might've missed (Total newbee when it comes to desktop design) or do you know some other page where I can find a few of these and free.

Many thanks!

Could you explain a bit more? ObjectDock??

By the way the utility I am using there is an ".exe" file and is called "Workshelf"
from, http://www.winstep.net/index.

It's not free (Trial 30 days) and if I don't find a good free one I guess I'll buy that one in 30 days.

ObjectDock. The toolbar on the right looks like a zoomer dock using some docklets (clock, trash, meters, etc) and the one on the bottom looks like a tabbed dock as a drawer.

The try version of Object Dock is a free version with limitation - 1 dock zoomer {but can be placed anywhere} and no systray support (but there's a docklet for that)

Still not asleep ^^

I'm not understanding something though. I'm not that interested of making skins. I'd just like to download a desktop manager.

So these DM's made with ObjectDock...do they actually work like .exe files without the "Object Dock" Program?

Desktop Managers

Anyway I was a bit stupid there. I don't like to have a program to run a program - to much of a mess when you have hundreds of programs like this.

But I figured out now after a bit of thinking that what I am downloading are in essence skins for the mainprogram "Object Dock" and that they themselves aren't independent programs needing Object Dock to run.

Hope you're following me here, a bit (lot) tired so I can't form normal sentances then.

Anyway thanks for all your help, I think I got it all figured out now. If anyone has an other program except "ObjectDock" please recommend that also, either here or through PM!

Each category of skins (Windowblinds, Object Dock, DesktopX, etc) needs the relevent program to use. Hence the relevent program site link at the top of each gallery.

yep - skins

What I thought the Object Dock program did was to produce a working exe file (that is a program) just like you have tools to produce entire games in a few days that work independently.

Anyway, is any of those you listed up there free? With everything included.
Since the ObjectDock thing can't do anything except open docks with icons.

By the looks of it, this is a theme called PixOS.

PixOS has themes for many different programmes including NextStart, ObjectDock, WindowBlinds etc.

Search PixOS on the home page of this site.
Also, please tell us if you find what you're looking for.

Some have trial versions but they are skinning apps. DesktopX allows you to add widgets to your desktop which themselves are a .exe, but each is set-up for a specific function.
Widgets do not require DesktopX to be running, just has to be installed. DesktopX themes may be able do some of what you are after. Theme can have their own taskbar, menus etc to use to access your other apps.

I am a little confused by this, is a DM not a program that you run to then have access to run your other programs.

With ObjectDock Plus, you can have multiple docks, it also has tabbed docks, one dock multipe tabs giving access to many programs. For $20 you would have one program running to have access to everything on your computer, programs, folders, games etc.

I'm not sure, I think nothing really. The only difference is that I have to pay for Workshelf and here I have to pay for both Object Bar and the skin since the skin is included in the Desktop manager i'm using atm (Workshelf).

But thanks for finding the skin.

I guess there aren't any free programs then except a few corporate sponsored ones like Alienware and Nvidia. What a pitty.

Edit: Didn't read the latest replies.

Well. The program I am using is like ObjectDock/bar+Sysmetrix+Widgets that you get in DesktopX(which are like new extra sysmetrixes right?) but alot more simple.
That is you can do alot more with these three programs mentioned above than with just Workshelf. You see everything seen in that screenshoot is ran by only one program and thus takes very little memory while for example sysmetrix takes quite alot on it own.
Basicly the good thing with Workshelf is that you get all in one, just not as easy to customize.

What I'm disappointed to though is that there's no geeks that have done a freeware version of things like this just as good as yours (Stardock) and "Winsteps" Workshelf... *Sadness*

Ahh well I'll just have to buy one of yours then. heh

That then would be one drawback of ObjectDock, most of the docklets for cpu,ram etc require sysmetrix to function.
