Help! Internet Shortcut icons remaining as default windows icons

Greetings everyone.

Anybody else having trouble with IconPackager not properly changing the icon for internet shortcuts? They still display the default Explorer document's 'e' icon. Very frustrating.

Local .htm and .html files are properly substituted, but the internet shortcuts are not. Doesn't matter if they are created by Firefox or by Internet Explorer or by creating a new shortcut on the desktop via the right-click menu -- They are all the sucky Explorer 'e' icon!

Rebuilding the cache, etc., does nothing.  I'm using the latest version of Icon Packager; Windows XP SP2.

I'd appreciate any help.  Thanks!

It's good to hear that a few other people are having the same problem. Well... not good that the problem exists, but reassuring that my problem is not unique. Misery loves company, as they say.

I'll take your suggestion and e-mail this to support@stardock.

If anyone else reading this has a suggestion/solution, please post!!

So I right clicked in my desktop folder, new shortcut, pointed to this post and got:

It appears that this issue is unfortunately a limitation of Windows. However, if you reapply the Icon Package, the icon should be redrawn with the correct image.

Mine was working fine for a long time on my old xp pro system. But, with my new laptop, windows xp pro 2nd ed doesn't change OUTLOOK's icon. I've attempted multiple icon repairs, even multiple shortcuts, and still Icon Packager won't change OUTLOOK. All other desktop icons change fine.

I am aware of changing it manually via properties, and done so. But, it's annoying every time I change icons, forcing me to manually change the OUTLOOK icon.

Any solution???

TitanI9: Does the icon package you're applying include an Outlook Express icon? Which Icon Package are you applying? Does this show up with the correct customized icon in the Start Menu?

Mike, I have tried and tried to re-apply the package and it doesn't work. I am having a problem with not only internet shortcuts, but .txt, .dat, .log also only showing the default windows icon, not the one that comes with Windows but the icon labeled default icon in the package I am using. I use the Apogee icon suite, and didn't have problems in the past but they are there now. I just recently formated my computer and started from scratch so unfortunately I can't go back to a previous version of Iconpackager.

I recentlly uninstalled IE7 (by accident) and the icons returned. So I'm guessing it's a IE7 issue.

Yes, it's that IE7, I'll bet. This is the second time I've been convinced to install the IE upgrade, only to have to roll it back when it screwed things up

Agreed that rolling back IE6 fixes the problem, but some setting in IE or Windows Registry must be determining what icon gets displayed. Anyone have a clue?

This issue is unresolved as of the latest release, at least in Vista. my icons won't chnage using IP no matter what I do or how many times I do it. Any ideas?

It isn't just an IE problem. I recently applied a package and the icons updated (as expected) But when I removed the package and reset it to "Windows Default" I got blank page icons for my internet and email on the start menu. When I click them, it says "Can't find blah blah... would you like to remove this link?" I use Firefox and Thunderbird, and I went into the properties and changed it to IE and Live Mail, and those icons appeared properly. I uninstalled IconPackager, and no luck.

Yes, I can confirm that indeed. This is not only FF/TM problem, it's everywhere. Many file types change to those one set with IP, *only* after standard program for opening is set (like IE for html files in Windows). But the same thing happens for me with .iso (set icon only shows with Nero, not when set to open with for ex. Daemon), .txt/.nfo/.ini (only works with Notepad, not OpenOffice) and many others. This is really annoying.

I second that confirmation, really annoying. A known issue since Sep. 2006? 2 years, man thats a lotta slack. $20 for another bug I guess.

I found a temporary solution to manually fix the IE icon regardless of version for those using WIN7. I say this is a temporary fix in the expectation that the company will fix the problem properly. I'm sure some clever user can find an approximate temporary solution for earlier versions of windows.

1) go to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer   or whatever path goes to your IE application.

2) Right Click on the IE application icon.

3) Select Properties, then go to the Icons tab.

4) Click on the Change Icon button and select the theme you want the icon to match from the list on the left

5) Search through the icons till you find the Internet icon and select it as the default Icon.

6) Remove any IE shortcuts on your desktop or pinned to your taskbar and replace them with the new IE icon.

Nowadays I have been experiencing a similar problem with Icon Packager 5 and I also need help. Although I have tried many times, Icon Packager 5 insists on screening different Desktop and folder icons, which I haven't selected. I want to know what the source of this problem is. How can I overcome this problem? Is there anyone suffering from the same problem?

Hello,

Had this problem for years on various XP systems.  Still do have this problem.  IP does not apply skins to desktop icons for internet shortcuts, or program start shortcuts.  Sure would like a fix.  Without fixing this annoying problem it makes no sense to upgrade to version 5.  Thanks.
