Upgrades and Scrapping - in orbit only?

I would like to see the code changed so that you could only scrap a ship for money when it is in orbit over a planet with a starport. Same with upgrades. It just seems very reasonable to allow ships to magically change to a new type of ship without any outside assistance. Or, for that matter, allowing them to fold up into scrap metal, then ship themselves, and their crew, back to a planet.

what....

what the OP is talking about is you can only upgrade ships at planets that have starports and not in open space.

It would change game mechanics alot but maybe it should be cheaper for doing something like that.

Anyway if there is advanced fusion engines then you can create enough energy to create matter or to change elements.

If that were the case, then starports would be unneccessary... you could just spawn new ships from an older one.

It is a minor point... there isn't much point in arguing about the "realism" of technologies we don't even have.
