Good Year for Turn Based

Maybe turn based games were never really in trouble but this year seems to be one of the best years in recent memory. This year will have games such as GalCiv II, HOMM V (with no starforce), Dominions 3, the Malfador Mechanations title (can't think of it at the moment) and many more. Really more games to play than I have time...what a great problem to have!

It might sound a little dramatic, but maybe turn based games will saving computer gaming.

When I look back on the PC games that have been released over the years I'm kind of disappointed. They just don't make them like they used to. Either its a good idea with a horrible execution, or a bad idea with a great one. It might have always been that way, but I've felt nostalgic for the classics like X-Com: UFO Defense, Baldur's Gate II, Starsiege Tribes, those were the days.

Thankfully there are games like GC II, keeping PC games from totally flat lining. I'm sick of this high-budget, over cooked games that are all style and no substance. Games have become so sensationalized and tailored to the dumb masses. Wait a minute...turn based games can't get too popular, if they do, they'll be turned into low brow crapfests tailored to the interests of sugar highed teens and twitch gamers!

HOMM V (with no starforce)

HOMM V won't have Starforce? Are you pulling my leg?

dare we hope for a Moo4?

maybe after Atari/Infogrames finishes circling the drain and sells off the license to somebody that would actually understand the target market and support their product after release?

Martimus,

I checked the HOMM V forum and the big buzz is that it was decided they would NOT use starforce a couple of days ago...about the time they released the demo. I will have to go back and see if I can provide the link to the forum discussion.

Nope, it got removed. Something the Galciv2 fiasco probably had something to do with.

Galciv2: Removing the threat of Starforce from the galaxy!

Yeah i was stoked when i heard HOMM V was getting rid of starforce(ubi soft said they wont use it in any future games either) kuz i cant wait for that game to get into my hands, hopfully doesnt suck liek 4 did :\

I think HOMM V will be a good title. Everything I have heard about the demo is good and generally demo reviews are pretty poor for most games (GalCIV II of course has had good reviews all around so I can't count that one).

The malfador game you are looking for is Star Empires V which will hopefully be released sometime this year ( no date announced yet and their site Link is rarely updated

Civ4 expansion as well as Disgaea 2 (PS2) will also be coming out this year for more TBS gaming fun.

As for MoO4, I don't think we'll ever see it. MoO3 was one of the worst games I have ever played, not only did the users get screwed but I don't think the developers liked working for Atari/Quicksilver/whatever. I don't know if the brand name MoO is worth anything anymore, I don't think you can scam people to buy MoO4 like they did with MoO3 unless it gets really good reviews so I don't think any company will pay for the license to a MoO4.

I just hope we don't have to wait 3-4 years for a new batch of good strategy games.

I really think we are about to see some good titles this years (as mentioned) I may be wrong but I have really not seen many stratagy games I have been really interested in or happy with in the last few years. This year is the first where I actually look forward to some new titles.

I agree about the comment made about real time twitch jockies getting their hands in the turn based market and screwing it up any further. Keep up the support for the little guys and the bigger ones that actually try to meet our segment of the gaming industry. (StarDock, Matrix, Strategy First, etc.)

To support the few turn based strategy developers, I plan to buy every one of the games mentioned--and any expansion packs.

Moo4?

hey you are playing it now - it is just called galciv2

moo2 was the best space strat game for 11 years. quite an achievemnet. I do miss some things from it tho:
leaders
capturing ships
guarded special planets
fighting my own tactical combat

to name a few.
I guess we may see some of these in expansions.

As someone who generally liked Moo3, try some of teh new user created mods in the forums (the vinilla, strawberry, and tropical mods).

Moo3 did bring some interesting ideas to the table, ideas worth revisiting, they just could have been executed better.

I also enjoyed MoO3, but it really was a let down. I wasn't a fan of the way the task force system was set up. Also, you deluged by WAY too much info in that game. While it was a pain at first, it got easier to play after a few games.

That being said, I would love to see a MoO4 come out some time and I would also love for there to be another Star Control game (not planned, but possible) another of my old school favorite games. Link

Anybody on here played the Kohan series? It's technically an RTS, but it plays WAY more like a TBS than an RTS. If you haven't tried it, definately pick up the 2nd one, it's pretty nice. I'm a big TBS fan, but I do also like RTS somewhat (mainly because I'm picky about my TBS games, never could get into civ, dunno why, but I love moo/mom/moo2, and now gc2, but aside from those, that doesnt leave much ). It's almost like a hybrid RTS/TBS, has a random map generator, and you actually found new cities, not just town halls to get resources. Plus the battles are handled automatically so the clickfest you get with most rts games like warcraft dont really enter into it so much.

GalCiv2 goes on my list of the best games ...

GalCiv2
Total Annihilation
Heroes III
Neverwinter Nights +
Tribes 2
Dungeon Keeper 2
and no list would be complete without mentioning the experience of ...Daggerfall

You forgot to add Master of Magic to your list.

i kinda liked MOO 3, atleast what i could see it was supposed to be anyhow. it had so much potential.

i wish that some big money company would make a game like this and put in some polish. you know, make you feel like an emperor instead of a construction forman. GS 2 has done a great job with the ships and a fair job with the planet development (not being able to set individual planet tax rates is driving me nuts and makes the triple food bonusus basicaly usless) things like that. but it doesnt really make me feel like an emperor, just a build boss, build X, then build Y, then Z and finaly send in the swarm rinse, repeat. the whole game is basicaly over after the planet rush.

i want

1) sim-empire in space. i want lots and lots of choices of what and where to build. and they all must mean something specific to my empire. no improvments just for the sake of padding the list and no idea of what they really do. (embassys anyone? )

2) total imersion as an emperor of the

I have been playing around with the HOMM V demo and it is pretty good. If the demo is good, I can only assume the final version will be also. BTW, not sure if it will allow much modding considering the intense graphic nature of the title but it will come with a map editor...insuring a longer life on my HD.
