Solved - Fences does not seem to work

HI all,

I just downloaded the free fences, and tried to create a fence around one group of my icons. I saw the rectangle as I made it, but once I let go of the right mouse button, the "fence," if I created one, disappeared. Did I actually make a fence? If so, why can't I see it, or put a label on it?

I must be missing something. Next, I could not register because I  have no serial number. Could it be it will not create a fence until it is registered?

Thanks for your help.

Are you shure you have created a fence? You have to hold right click on your desktop and then move your mouse until the fence is big enough. Then release the right mouse button. A small menu should appear and ask you if you want to create a fence, which you should choose.

Then choose a name for your fence and drag the files/folders into it.

You have downloaded the free version and tried to register it? If you have actually bought the pro version, you can find the download and serial here: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

But the free version should also work fine. You have the ability to create and use fences. While the pro version does have more functions with automatically handling created files and will have more functions later.

Hi Asound,

Yes, I use the right button and create what appears to be a fence, but as soon as I let go of the button I see nothing. I don't get a menu. How big a fence do I need to create? I tried one around some icons and that did not work. I tried a 2" or so square with no icons and that did not work. Is the fence suppose to be visible after it is created? Can we, in fact, build a fence around existing icons placed where I want them?

Asound, maybe this is not what I want or need. I have all my icons arranged in groups. I know exactly where to look for the one I want. But after my daughter used the computer, they were all arranged differently! I don't want that to happen again!

It was my hope that I could build a fence around one group of icons and then they would forever be in my "corral!" Perhaps they could move inside the fence, but that would not be as bad as all of them arranging alphabetically.

I uninstalled and reinstalled too. But the second time it did not give me the choice of selecting existing fences. SURELY I can create my own!

Perhaps it needed a reboot before it fully kicked in.  Glad you're up and running!

One of the great things about Fences is the Snapshot feature.  With that, even if icons get taken out of a fence or moved to a different fence you can restore them back where you wanted!

+1 to this. It is indeed a great feature sometimes when you start games and by default it selects the incorrect resolution and moves your icons out of place. The snapshot feature restores them. It really is wonderful.

Have you tried turning on the Per-Screen Resolution option?

I didn't notice that option. Thanks for pointing that out. It wasn't too much of a problem to begin with but this will be even better.

Edit: It appears the option was already selected. But let's see how it goes xD

Does it happen for you with all games, or only certain ones?  I know a lot of older games that weren't designed for newer OSs don't change resolutions in a very 'friendly' way, which can wreak havoc on desktop icons...

It happens whether fences is active or not and with pretty much any game that uses some ridiculous resolution as default typically 800x600. I just use the snapshot feature to restore my icons.
