Alpha Status?
Anything word on the status of the Alpha?
No.
Hmm....I hope there is another FAQ soon.
When you ask Stardock for a status update on the alpha- god kills a Bear Cavalry.
yeah, and sunday night after a holiday isn't a good time to ask anyway. Most of us likely arn't going to be able to play anything until PAX anyway. So the alpha is really the next major "update" about the game because people will have the chance to play "hands-on" Its like asking "is there an update on when we get an update?" And generally, its bad juju to constantly beg for updates (which is what I believe is arstal's point) and there already is a "when is the alpha" thread by wintersong.
No harm in asking. Who can blame me right?
I don't thing there is any harm in asking in this situation, because Stardock isn't going to pass out from somebody simply asking.
however sometimes it does hurt. I've seen many people or groups who are trying to do something 'nice' for the people of the internet, withdraw their offer because they feel that the community is demanding too much. (Kaizoku-fansubs, for example, got so tired of people asking "when's the next episode coming out" that asking is a bannable offense, no warnings. And I'm sure Little Kuriboh, the creator of Yugioh abridged, has been too burnt out by his "overly demanding fanbase" to work on his stuff. Some companies don't give release dates, because then people bitch too much when the date isn't met. So just answering questions like "when's it commin'?" can be difficult, and so having users ask can be frustrating. (again, I wouldn't worry about it causing harm, because Stardock is full of very understandable people. I'm just pointing out that it CAN cause harm, and has in other instances. we have not really been pestering them, and I think it would be nice if we got something more narrow than "in July" But still.)
They do need to update the front page though - it still says June 2009. Otherwise we will keep getting people asking questions like this (although I understand this particular post is related to the limited alpha rather than the open beta).
Frogboy posted June 30th:
"The beta version should be ready in around 60 days. Hard to believe that we’re finally getting close after all this time. Players who pre-order it will get access to the betas and qualify to have access to the alpha version."
That's very nice, but I agree that they should fix up the homepage to match.
Front page/Impulse updates are often a problem for some reason. I'm not sure if the web team just isn't in communication with the dev team, or what it is.
Entrenchment had the same thing happen several times, to the point where it actually went up on Impulse as a release (ie not beta) product for a while because the delay hadn't been entered. Several other times they had a date on the Impulse store that everybody on the forums knew was off, and had known for weeks. The one exception to that was the guy who just came from the store and made a thread asking why it wasn't out at the stated date.
This is actually one case where I really like the way Blizzard does things. There's no dates. It's frustrating to never get a date out of them, but it eliminates this type of problem where people who don't follow the forums closely get confused because dates keep moving around.
Ohhh yeahhhh... I almost forgot:

I guess "when will we get alpha?" is the most FAQ
Major To-Do items still for Alpha...
---------------------------
- AI -
Python is now fully hooked up for the AI, who now has their logic structure implemented. AI currently runs around, picking up goodie huts (that it shouldn't know about) and building cities (not next to resources).
For Alpha, we need them to activly explore the map, making notes of discovered map objects and acting accordingly (grabbing goodie huts within their level, battling lesser creatures, and founding cities wisely).
- Map Generation -
Naval units will not be in the early builds, so we've implemented a 'Single Continent' land mass option. This mostly works, bt sometimes results in 2 continents, and sometimes it results in an all-water map. This needs fixed.
- Better Tooltips -
Our new UI is heavilly reliant on snazzy tooltips to convey data for rolled-over objects. Tooltips are looking A LOT better that GC2's 'Black and White Box', but we still need the more info-intensive ones added to the mix.
- Better Goodie Huts -
Goodie Huts need a level associated with them and possible creatures to attack you or guard that hut.
---------------------------
And looking over our list I think that may be it. It'd be nice to get the gfx threading in, optimizing XML loading, etc, but thanks to 2 & 1/2 very productive weeks everything else is pretty solid.
We'll keep you posted.
Nice update Boogie ![]()
"Goodie Huts": Aka. Dungeons?
As in Civ style goodie huts.
Sammual
*Joy* I can't wait to start playing with the AI and Scripting capabilities in Elemental.
AI and Map Gen are my current projects for my MoM-like game. I think I have Map gen about 99% done, the only issue I have left is the rare case when a resource gets placed in a place that can not be in a cities range.
Sammual
Permanent? Or just for the alpha in place of something else? I didn't imagine something like that fitting into Elemental, but we'll just have to ait & see......
He doesn't mean they'll literally look like goodie the Civ4 goodie huts. Sammual was just pointing out the gameplay mechanic, since you thought they were dungeons.
Basically: a tile in which you walk on to get rewards. GalCiv2 had them, too.
I understood that they woudln't look the same, I just did not think that that mechanic would be included.
Goodie Huts will actually allow for a lot of interaction...some will be 'lost crates' that may have treaure (traditional one-time goodie huts), some may be Troll Encamplemts, etc.
Sounds like maybe they're just on end of the complexity spectrum for 'dungeons,' or is there some fundamental distinction I'm failing to imagine between a 'dungeon' and a 'goody hut?' (I ask because the idea of a Troll Encampment sounds like what other games might call an 'encounter,' and the latter is sort of how I've been imagining Elemental dungeons so far--with the above- or below-ground part being just a detail.)
Cool. Thanks for the updates BoogieBac.
