Defense Towers?

I just got the game today. I've tried to play a few times against the AI, and there's one thing I can't figure out. The defense towers that are placed on the map at the start, they're very powerful. I can't understand how it's supposed to be possible to push through to the enemy's citadel through those towers. They take out my demigod in just a couple of shots.

What am I missing here?

You aren't supposed to push through the defense towers until later in the game when you have levelled up and have skills to increase your range, damage, armor etc.  and also units designed to kills towers from safe ranges like catapult dinosaurs. 

In other words:  stay away from the towers that are killing you.  If they are killing you, it's because you are not supposed to be in their range.
